The price of gas is shooting up around the area, but gas distributors say the most important thing right now is to stay calm. Gas stations across Central Virginia are seeing cars lined up into the roads to fill up. Officials at Candler Oil say their supply is fine, and that this "panic buying" is only going to hurt the situation. We're told the worst thing that can happen right now is for everyone to fill up. According to Sheetz Inc., the pipeline in Texas that supplies gas to the east coast has shut down in preparation for Hurricane Ike's landfall. They say the pipeline is going to be shut down until Monday. It won't be until the storm clears that officials can survey the damage. Sheetz is going to try its best to keep gasoline at the wholesale price of $3.49 a gallon, but that all depends on whether or not drivers buy it all up. If local stations run out, Sheetz says trucks will need to bring it in from the northeast, and that might cause prices to rise. Sheetz will not speculate as to how high prices could go up. Right now company officials are saying to conserve gas and only drive as much as is necessary. By the way, the price of oil fell below $100 per barrel for the first time in five months. They have shut off some pipeline in Texas, and supply is cut off to our region for a few days. They are trying to get gas from elsewhere. In NC some stations are actually limiting folks to 10 gallons.
