I just heard gas will be up to 5 a gallon everywhere tomorrow...which explains the excessive lines at the gas stations around town.

Here's what WSET has to say about it.

"Gas stations across Central Virginia are seeing cars lined up into the roads to fill up. Officials at Candler Oil say their supply is fine, and that this "panic buying" is only going to hurt the situation. We're told the worst thing that can happen right now is for everyone to fill up."

Drove by the Sheetz behind campus...cars lined up ONTO Wards Road...past Golden Corral almost to the ramp off of 460. Gas still at 3.49 there...and East Coast was up to 3.61. Price gouging at its finest...
...and...oh yeah...Oil DROPPED BELOW $100 a barrel today!

Governor Kaine declared a state of emergency during the last system...
...but what about those that gouge in VA when the emergency is in TX/LA?

From News 13
The price of gas is shooting up around the area, but gas distributors say the most important thing right now is to stay calm. Gas stations across Central Virginia are seeing cars lined up into the roads to fill up. Officials at Candler Oil say their supply is fine, and that this "panic buying" is only going to hurt the situation. We're told the worst thing that can happen right now is for everyone to fill up. According to Sheetz Inc., the pipeline in Texas that supplies gas to the east coast has shut down in preparation for Hurricane Ike's landfall. They say the pipeline is going to be shut down until Monday. It won't be until the storm clears that officials can survey the damage. Sheetz is going to try its best to keep gasoline at the wholesale price of $3.49 a gallon, but that all depends on whether or not drivers buy it all up. If local stations run out, Sheetz says trucks will need to bring it in from the northeast, and that might cause prices to rise. Sheetz will not speculate as to how high prices could go up. Right now company officials are saying to conserve gas and only drive as much as is necessary. By the way, the price of oil fell below $100 per barrel for the first time in five months. Stay tuned to ABC-13 for the latest,

I've heard from several sources that prices should go up 30-50 cents by monday. Normally they don't raise the price on friday, it will be either sunday or monday unless like the article said all the gas gets used up from the rush, in which case the price would go up immediatly

Uh, who are these "sources"? There is no reason for any price increase in the next few days unless several of the refineries suffer catastrophic damage. The storm surge could be significant but I doubt enough to have much of an impact.

Prices all along Campbell Ave. jumped 30 cents to 3.89 this afternoon, except Wilco/Hess, which is still 3.49 and has a line clear across Florida Ave. back onto 501. Source: my own newly repaired eyes, now 20/20 with contacts. Thanks again for your prayers about that.

What in the world is everybody talking about? I coincidentally got gas earlier today because I was running on empty. What is causing the panic?

Read the story fumblerooskie posted above. They have shut off some pipeline in Texas, and supply is cut off to our region for a few days. They are trying to get gas from elsewhere. In NC some stations are actually limiting folks to 10 gallons.

Idiots.

Don't get gas unless you absolutely have to. There is NO need to panic right now.

The big problem seems to be rumors. I've had several friends call and say "Gas is $5 all over town" when in reality 1 is $5 and the reas are all under $4
