WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long- awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman's constitutional right to an abortion.

I can't even imaging being in college and having a cell phone (of course- they were'nt invented when we were there- and I'm not kidding)

Allow me to explain, my elven friend.

Why do you send people email instead of calling them? That's the same reason people should be sending text messages. Well that, and for service uses. I get weather alerts, bank account balance updates, etc. via text messages on my phone every day. I also get alerts from systems at the school if there are major problems. Are the computers supposed to call me like I'm some kind of 911 dispatcher? "Nick! Ack! Help us! The pain! The horror!"

Additionally, I might want to make someone aware of something without actually having to have a conversation. Let's say I get one of those alerts while I'm at dinner. It's much faster for me to send a quick message to whoever is on duty to say "Check on ____" than it is to call them from the table, or step away from the table.

Sometimes entire phone conversations just aren't necessary.

By the way, if you use a lot of text message/email functions, look into phones with full keyboards whenever you buy your next one. It makes a world of difference when it comes to usability.

Agreed. Every time I think about PBA, I imagine the day my son was born. To think that on that day someone just as easily could have stabbed him before they handed him to me, and that it would have been legal...it makes my heart break and my blood boil.

the walky talky function is effective for on-site work. for example, my dad is a sales rep. when he's on the job site, he just walky-talkies up to the guys putting in glass, as well as other business men involved in the job. saves him from having to make numerous 10-second phone calls to recieve and get a message across. then of course the walky-talky is the normal phone, and text-messaging device (which jerry proved that just about EVERYONE uses!)

Thanks for the heads up on the full keyboard. I sometimes send as many as 50-60 texts a day (I rarely ever call people unless they don't have text messaging and I'm forced to) so that could work.

but think about it....i understand what you are saying but by the time its all said and done asking the question, getting the answer, asking another question, getting an answer, then saying bye, you've already been goofing around with it you've already got a minute invested

well, my .02 about texting... its great for settings in which you can't make a call, which is most of the time every day for me. class, work, church, convo. then you have places to loud: bus, ball games, other random loud places. also good to use so you can avoid long winded poeple

because now women dont have complete free choice, which is rediculous. No one is making them have sex, theres there choice. People in this country do not know how to deal with consequences, whether it be little consequences like not cutting you hair and getting reps, to drinking every night and losing your job, which could lead to more consequences in that you could become homeless and lose your family, to getting pregnant and placing the blame on someone else and passing the consequences to the baby. If there is any law that deals with consequences, Liberals want it gone. We shouldnt get a slap on the wrist for anything, we should simply be told no, because apparently this nation is full of morons that are 3 years old, want everything hand fed to them without doing a single thing, and if they mess up its no problem.

We're also forgetting that it's a valuable tool if you are single and trying to figure out which ladies are out and doing what on certain nights, without actually having to make a phone call and commit to one. Very very valuable.*

I was just reading some articles and thought I'd gather some information (which I'm sure we've all heard at one point or another) and present it to the class:

The procedure is usually performed during the fifth month of gestation or later. The woman's cervix is dilated, and the fetus is partially removed from the womb, feet first. The surgeon inserts a sharp object into the back of the fetus' head, removes it, and inserts a vacuum tube through which the brains are extracted. The head of the fetus contracts at this point and allows the fetus to be more easily removed from the womb.

This decision marks a dramatic departure from four decades of Supreme Court rulings that upheld a woman's right to choose and recognized the importance of women's health. Today's decision blatantly defies the Court's recent decision in 2000 striking down a state partial-birth abortion law because of its failure to provide an exception for the health of the mother. As the Supreme Court recognized in Roe v. Wade in 1973, this issue is complex and highly personal; the rights and lives of women must be taken into account. It is precisely this erosion of our constitutional rights that I warned against when I opposed the nominations of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito

I strongly disagree with today’s Supreme Court ruling, which dramatically departs from previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women. As Justice Ginsburg emphasized in her dissenting opinion, this ruling signals an alarming willingness on the part of the conservative majority to disregard its prior rulings respecting a woman’s medical concerns and the very personal decisions between a doctor and patient. I am extremely concerned that this ruling will embolden state legislatures to enact further measures to restrict a woman's right to choose, and that the conservative Supreme Court justices will look for other opportunities to erode Roe v. Wade, which is established federal law and a matter of equal rights for women.

I could not disagree more strongly with today's Supreme Court decision. The ban upheld by the Court is an ill-considered and sweeping prohibition that does not even take account for serious threats to the health of individual women. This hard right turn is a stark reminder of why Democrats cannot afford to lose the 2008 election. Too much is at stake - starting with, as the Court made all too clear today, a woman's right to choose

i can't stand john edwards. i wrote him a letter one time concerning something he said about my blue devils. it was very professional, kind-hearted, and well written. nothing to make him angry, just simply asking him a question. he sent me back a letter that was snobby and very unprofessional.
