Chris Lang wrote:Having covered Western basketball for a good portion of my career, I'm not sure McKay is the guy you guys want. He's a bit of a hothead. He never stayed long enough at any of his programs (PSU, CSU, OSU) to build a program. McKay is the sort of guy who would take the job and treat it like Matt Doherty at Florida Atlantic. He'd try to leave the first chance he got. Not to mention he's getting fired for dragging New Mexico to a level it hasn't been in two decades. Why would you want him?

Now if Ray Giacolletti, who is resigning at Utah, has any interest, Liberty would be smart to give him a look. He's had success at the mid-major level and his players at Eastern Washington loved him.

Ray Giacoletti

He's got big-time credentials, but he's probally beyond our reach.

RG led Utah to a recent sweet-16 appearance as a head coach. In addition, he was once an assistant at ORU, probally under Bill Self.

Simply a classic moment...Jerry said "what do you want me to do???" He should have been given a T for that but of course not

I'm throwing that name in to the ring... Former NBA player Mark Price... and a guy who was rumored for the job before we gave it back to Dunton.

Someone on this board has mentioned Mark Price before. Here's why that doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Mark Price's overall coaching record:

In 2006, he went 0-6 w/ the South Dragons of the Australian League. And then he resigned.

That's it. He's never coached anywhere else.

I'm not sure who the players were on the great and illustrious "South Dragons of the Australian League" but I'd suspect there could be any number of 1000 reasons a guy would quit coaching in that situation... who knows? 6 games in... he could have decided the distance was too much on the family, problems with ownership, travel, respect of players... any number of reasons... I wouldn't hold that against the guy.... but besides the name he doesn't fit JB's outline of who he wants... I wouldn't hate his selection.

Does anyone think we can get a "named" guy?

I just got off the phone with Jeremy Eck, well he left me a message because I am Sick and Cant talk, but he is excited about the opportunity to Coach the Flames next season and he saw my post for the nomination of him as coach on here and I think he wouldnt be too expensive either... JB Give him a call, hes a great fit!

When and where did he say that? Is it public? Written down? Audio/Video?

I think an African American would be great but I'd be surprised if he came out and said that race was a major factor in his decision... regardless which direction that statement was made... He'd be looking for a lawsuit.

I've not heard anyone other than TBGBG say what he just reported.

For news like that you have to have two sources...
...of course, FFdotcom ain't exactly high level journalism.

From what i am hearing, he is going to at least give a strong look to someone from the current SC staff, so well see.

I have heard the same thing Rocket. I figured that was where he would look first, especially considering he worked there and has dealt with them.

I said when the search first opened I think Duckett would be a favorite if he went to South Carolina to look for a coach. Duckett has won at the DII level, including the award of South Atlantic Coach of the Year. It would either be him or Barry Sanderson, but I'm leaning more towards Rick Duckett.

He's a firey guy, and would do great in at least getting the community rejuvinated about LU Basketball. I think we should add him and Sanderson to our list of coaching options.

The prevailing rumor is Ritchie McKay, however, I'm hoping that something falls through there and Barber gives Al Sherard a shot.

Impressive bio on the NM site. Other than this year, what has he done to warrant being canned?
http://golobos.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl ... hie00.html

Of course, this jumped out at me...
In fact, of the 11 Lobos that have completed their eligibility since Ritchie McKay took over the New Mexico program, eight have receive their diplomas. The other three - Douglas, Granger and Javin Tindall - are all playing professional basketball at some level.

He also has his own personal web site...
http://www.coachritchiemckay.com/

and finally, a story about his dismissal...
http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2007/feb/22/mckay-fired/

...in which the following REALLY jumps out at me:
The Lobos opened the season 5-0 with what McKay said was his most talented team at New Mexico. But UNM, apparently beset by internal problems, began to struggle and quickly fell out of the conference race.

McKay and Athletics Director Paul Krebs have had a number of discussions over the past months, Harris said, citing in particular several discipline issues among the players.

If this a coach who has had discipline issues, or even rumors of issues, I do not think we need more of what I've seen rumored around LU the past 5 years. I officially vote NO on this "candidate."

That's nice, LU and HPU both with coaches from Queens. Where is Marshall going?

He also made about $500,000 per year. Not bad if I must say so myself.
