I think you hit the nail on the head. We will have to be slightly better to earn a ranking than most others schools would have to.


In a way I like computer rankings because, as flawed as they are, at least coaches and schedule makers can know the formula and plan accordingly. Of course the formula itself can have a bias, but at least it’s know and it hidden in voters’ heads.

SMU beat mighty North Texas. If we beat ODU with “style points” we should move up as much or more than SMU would. SMU doesn’t even have one win against a team with a 500 record or better. Not saying they couldn’t jump us if they win out, just that I’m not worried this week.

I don’t know that we pass up any of these teams, but there’s a chance for us to pass up any of them.

Fresno state is currently getting blow out 35-10 by SJSU late in the 3rd quarter and air force is losing 20-10 to Hawaii heading into the 4th quarter. If both scores stay, the mountain West champ will have 2 or more losses and in theory shouldn't be able to jump us if we stay undefeated.

Update: Air Force gave up a scoop and score then threw 3 straight interceptions to lose to Hawaii. At this point it seems like the AAC is our biggest concern and I'm not convinced Tulane will survive UTSA let alone SMU in the championship game.

The path got clearer yesterday.

Most importantly, it’s not not winning but how we win that matters from here on out.

Our SOR is 16 (15 amongst bowl eligible teams) and FPI is now 47. We beat Tulane in both those categories as Tulane’s SOR is 20 and FPI is 54. I’m not sure what’s keeping them ahead of us at this point, and as Ill Flame pointed out they have a few tough games they’re almost expected to lose. That being said, Tulane may control their own destiny if they win out, unless we start really smoking teams.

SMU maybe can pass us but they still play Memphis and the conference championship game. They also have a good FPI at 23 but poorer SOR at 34. If they win out and look good maybe they can pass us? Hard for me to imagine that a two loss AAC team gets in over us though as there is some pageantry to having a smaller conference undefeated team.

It’ll be interesting to see where we sit in the AP today (Kansas State may jump us and Kansas fall behind us) but the real question is do we somehow sneak into the CFP on Tuesday.

Just for kicks I went back to look where we ended in 2020 which is likely the best season we’ve had (unless we win out this year somehow). We had a 21 SOR and a 76 FPI and finished #17 in the AP. We did have a signature win at the end of the year beating Coastal but resume wise, this team is better thus far.

The SOR and FPI and AP ranking makes the CFP committee look at LU. Heck, just being undefeated should be all it takes. But they’ve been clear the infamous Eye Test is their barometer.

I believe Tulane has to lose again. And if SMU wins out, I’m not convinced they don’t leapfrog LU. They shouldn’t. But I’m not convinced they don’t.

LU can’t lose. Win out in style, and I believe we deserve a shot at a P5 team. Tulane and SMU had their shots during the season and lost them. If you’re the CFP, wouldn’t you rather have that G5 be undefeated??

It also will help keep this team motivated even with the conference championship game locked in. But let's be real here. LU is right where they should be with this weak schedule. CUSA is not a strong conference. It is reality. Just keep winning. That's all you can do.

My feelings exactly. I hate the perception of this program but I can’t really argue with it at all.

I've noticed all of these projections have the G5 team either in the peach or Fiesta bowl. If we make it to a NY6 I really hope it's the cotton bowl so I can go. I don't care if it's against Texas in a glorified road game.

What are you using as a basis to say we are right where we should be? Obviously everyone has different criteria they are grading by which is fine. That’s what make sports fun!
