#15 Notre Dame loses to Clemson.
#23 Kansas State loses to Texas.
#25 Air Force loses to Army.

Tulane snuck by a one win ECU. Do we have a chance to jump them?

Washington is up a TD against against #20 USC.

Air Force had six turnovers and wasn;t even comeptitive with the Cadets.

Tulane is up 13-10 early in the 4th at East Carolina.

Honestly I see us being ranked in the CFP top 25 mostly because we will be the only undefeated G5 eligible for the poll. I think it’s too good of a storyline to keep us out now that Air Force has lost.

Not impressed with Tulane against Rice or 1-7 ECU. They're not the best G5.

#15 Notre Dame loses to Clemson. - probably won’t jump them because it’s Notre Dame.
#20 USC loses to Washington - jump
#23 Kansas State loses to Texas. - jump
#25 Air Force loses to Army. - jump

Tulane looked weak today against ECU. Maybe we pass them but probably not.

Arizona may beat #19 but it’s still early.

I think we find a way to be ranked in the CFP ranking for the first time in program history.

We still need some help even if we finish 13-0
Tulane needs to lose to UTSA in AAC championship game.
Air Force or Fresno St winning the MWC championship game would not be good for us, unless the winner were to lose one before that.

TH Spangler wrote: November 5th, 2023, 8:04 am As of today, I think Fresno State is the leading candidate for the NY6 bowl.
Perhaps but shouldn’t be. We have the best SOR out of any eligible G5 and we have a better FPI than all eligible G5s other than Tulane. Fresno does have a few wins against bad P5s so that helps them.

I also think there should be some value in being the only unbeaten. Air Force was in both the AP and CFP and their resume and FPI was worse than ours.

One thing that is likely part of the equation is that we aren’t exactly a media darling if you know what I mean.

Liberty: 9-0
SOR- 19
FPI- 51

Tulane: 8-1
SOR- 21
FPI- 48

Fresno St: 8-1
SOR- 27
FPI- 55

Imo it's a two horse race at this point but I fully expect another G5 to be ranked before us in the CFP rankings.

Based on the resume I see Fresno state as slightly behind but you never know about the eye test.

I’ve seen Tulane twice. I admit I haven’t seen Fresno since their Purdue win.

I was impressed with Fresno. I think Tulane’s D is a solid step above LU’s. But our offense is better. No real surprises here, just my personal eye test.

Beating ODU next Saturday will only help us in the polls: RISE WITH US! :dance :woohoo :clapping

I even love reading the fine print--OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES:
Fresno St. 73, Kansas St. 73, Southern Cal 46, Air Force 26, Toledo 25, UCLA 11, Iowa 6, SMU 5, Duke 4, West Virginia 3, Texas A&M 1, NC State 1, Clemson 1.

I think LU would beat 7 of those “others” teams. Our elite offense would run through several of them like Swiss cheese.

I’m having a hard time with Kansas State losing and still being ahead of us. All of their losses are quality losses but they have 3. They lost and dropped from 23 to 25.

I don't have a hard time with K state because they have a top 25 SOR. It's schools like UNC and Arizona with their SOR of 33 and 34 respectively that is more egrarious in my mind. UNC currently has a SOS of 100 and has two bad losses.

You’re right. Arizona has 3 losses and a SOR of 34 and they sit at 21? What metric justifies that ranking? I honestly don’t know what criteria the committee uses, because I don’t think either UNC or Arizona have a particular strong FPI.

The Eye Test!
I think you’re right. Honestly I don’t think we’re a top 25 team based on talent or our odds to win any particular game. I do think our results warrant us being there.

The thing that I find funny is that teams like Michigan are ranked so high with a SOS of 111. Obviously, the eye test comes into play, but being unbeaten has a value otherwise they wouldn’t be close to as high as they are. Similar to Georgia who has a 90 SOS. They are receiving an unbeaten bump (along with prestige that works opposite for us).

Lastly, who would the fans want to see in a NY6 bowl, an unbeaten Liberty (not saying we will be unbeaten, but hypothetically) or a 1 or two loss Tulane? I think the answer is obvious but maybe I’m just a homer.

Ill Flame pointed this out already but the concern is that if we can’t get ranked going unbeaten this year we have a hard time telling recruits we can get into the CFP in following years. The only lever we will have is winning with more style points to help us get ranked.

The more I look at rankings, (AP, Coaches Poll, and CFP rankings,) the less trust I have in them. I don't think there's a team in the country ranked where they really should be ranked.

I don't necessarily agree none of the teams are ranked correctly, but like pretty much anything else with a human element, there will be subjectivity and bias. Unfortunately, there is both when it comes to LU....ignorance and perception are often linked and naturally play into human nature. From what I saw, I don't think any of the Va AP voters rated LU in the T25. I find that interesting and wonder if we were an ODU or JMU with the exact same circumstances whether they would have voted for us in T25?

I think you hit the nail on the head. We will have to be slightly better to earn a ranking than most others schools would have to.

In a way I like computer rankings because, as flawed as they are, at least coaches and schedule makers can know the formula and plan accordingly. Of course the formula itself can have a bias, but at least it’s known and not hidden in voters’ heads.
