SOS is one element to look at, but you can't get carried away with it. The better teams usually have one of the lowest SOS's in their conference - because all the other teams get "SOS points" for playing them and they don't get those (because they can't play themselves).
CCG's should help all the top teams uptick a bit at the end though.
