Good -
Defense is much improved
AGG is a beast
AGG is a beast
Bad -
Calvert wouldn't even look at AGG - half the time... (It was crazy)(Single covered 90% of the game)
Playing so many running backs (let someone find their rhythm. Mack should have never been in the game in that situation)
Play calling was pitiful. Ran up the middle 40 times - clearly that wasn't our strength that night.
SU ran 3 different backs all night long. Didn't matter which back was in the game, after watching the film, the back side of the defense (#8) should have been picked up by someone. Calvert let him run right by him with no effort to slow him down. If Mack scored on the play, different conversation. But I agree, I thought Pickett was the short yardage back that should have been in that situation.
Reality is that we don't know what Mack could have done throughout the rest of the game. But we do that the backs who played the entire game gave us -6 yards rushing. Hickerson got plenty reps to find his rythm. I think Mack is actually our wildcard. I just don't think a kid can lead the FCS nation rushing, make the sacrifice to come to LU and, under this RB coach is not being better utilized! Outside of the SEC and Big 10, there is not a big difference between elite FCS teams and most FBS teams. Something is not adding up!
We are going to need all 3 backs to have a productive season. I would even use 2 at a time. Our O-line is not strong enough and Buckshot is not a dual-threat QB, so we need to run 2 backs and spread the defense with more creative play calling. Call plays that utilize the strenght of the RBs. Pickett in short yard situation. Hickerson and Mack in rotations. Mack for screen passes. Stubbs in Wildcat formations. etc, etc. This single back offense, in our situation, is too easy to defend.
The defense did a great job of taking on the SU and holding them to 24 points!
