Just remember that the most popular person on any football team is the back up QB

Good
1. AGG- I think I said this in the discussion at some point but he really has a chance to play himself into day 1 or day 2 of the NFL Draft
2. D-Line- They were all over the Orange backfield, especially Rusins, Lemonier and Lewis
3. Kick returning- Stubbs is gonna bust one before this year is out, I can feel it

Bad
1. SBC- If AGG has a chance to play himself into a high draft position, Calvert might be lucky to latch on as a UDFA.
2. O-line- For as poorly as #1 played, the line should have done a WHOLE lot better protecting him and creating running lanes for the running backs
3. Running backs- for as poorly as the line play was, the running backs showed little vision or burst or power.

Good:

Defense - Tackling is much improved and liked how the line pushed in the first half against the run game
AGG - I mean what else can we say at this point?
Team - I for one am very excited about the future of this team. Would've love to score sure, but very much improved and that's without a head coach for 2 weeks and a game.

Bad:

Buckshot - Idk why, but it seems like every ball he throws, he tries to throw it as hard as he can. Also, stares down every receiver
O-Line - Negative rush yards and 8 sacks. I don't think we will play a defensive line that good the rest of the year but still
Running game/playcalling - Acted like they didn't have an outside running play in the playbook. Ran constantly right into the strength of their defense on every run.

The play where we stacked 3 receivers on the right and ball "lateraled" to Stubbs then he threw out of bounds, which resulted in a "sack" and penalty, was the trick play. It was well covered. I would have liked to have seen a pitchout or two, or student body left/right, or even the occasional screen pass or dump down to RB.

Strength of the defense was the edges and perimter speed. Hence us trying to run up the middle. Honestly who knows how many outside runs we had called that may have been missed by qb and made a pass play.

Good -
Defense is much improved
AGG is a beast
AGG is a beast

Bad -
Calvert wouldn't even look at AGG - half the time... (It was crazy)(Single covered 90% of the game)
Playing so many running backs (let someone find their rhythm. Mack should have never been in the game in that situation)
Play calling was pitiful. Ran up the middle 40 times - clearly that wasn't our strength that night.

We threw several passes out of bounds, some were intentional probably to avoid another sack, but several appeared intended for a receiver and were overthrown. I would have liked to seen a couple long passes down middle of field.

For those complaining about running up the middle:

Remember we run a run/pass option based offense. It’s up to the quarterback to make the read on whether to hand it off or keep it and throw it. We don’t know how many of those were the right read or wrong read.

Jon's right. The dive (or counter) off the zone read is the foundational play for the type of offense we are using so naturally youre going to be going up the middle quite a bit unless you are utilizing a lot of jet/fly motion from the wide receivers as well
(Feel free to correct me on that if Im wrong Jon)

SBC, God bless him, is not someone who we could use for a lot of designed runs. JB we could probably run quite a few more of those with

I think we have a pretty good idea how many were right

Cuse Fan Answers

Good

Shutout win with dominate defense
Glad the Targeting Call was reversed
No season ending injuries

Bad
Offense was disjointed (QB and WRs out of sync)
Smaller than expected Cuse turnout
Concession Lines an issue

SU ran 3 different backs all night long. Didn't matter which back was in the game, after watching the film, the back side of the defense (#8) should have been picked up by someone. Calvert let him run right by him with no effort to slow him down. If Mack scored on the play, different conversation. But I agree, I thought Pickett was the short yardage back that should have been in that situation.

Reality is that we don't know what Mack could have done throughout the rest of the game. But we do that the backs who played the entire game gave us -6 yards rushing. Hickerson got plenty reps to find his rythm. I think Mack is actually our wildcard. I just don't think a kid can lead the FCS nation rushing, make the sacrifice to come to LU and, under this RB coach is not being better utilized! Outside of the SEC and Big 10, there is not a big difference between elite FCS teams and most FBS teams. Something is not adding up!

We are going to need all 3 backs to have a productive season. I would even use 2 at a time. Our O-line is not strong enough and Buckshot is not a dual-threat QB, so we need to run 2 backs and spread the defense with more creative play calling. Call plays that utilize the strenght of the RBs. Pickett in short yard situation. Hickerson and Mack in rotations. Mack for screen passes. Stubbs in Wildcat formations. etc, etc. This single back offense, in our situation, is too easy to defend.

The defense did a great job of taking on the SU and holding them to 24 points!

If mack doesnt protect the ball hes going to be buried. He made the cardinal sin at rb by fumbling on the goal line. You just cant make that mistake there. Not all fumbles are equal.

Just an observation on the comments about Mack not going back in after his fumble. He was already 3rd on the depth chart behind Pickett and Frankie. Listening to Coach Johnson talk about him gave me indication that Frankie and Pickett were a solid 1 and 2 in the backfield.

I honestly didn't expect him to play much to begin with unless we got blown out of the water.

I hope he rebounds and becomes an asset to our offensive game plan.

Did you even watch the play? It's not like the turf monster got him and he coughed it up. The ball got punched by an ACC player on his second live play since playing FCS ball. There is a very real difference in competition there. We all saw it, Mack was not alone in getting a little man handled by superior talent.

I can recognize that the fumble was costly but still give credit to the defense. The ball didn't come out by accident, it was sought after and good fundamentals pulled it out.

Maybe Mack carries the ball a little different now, but we didn't pull Buck after two picks, why are we benching Mack after his first fumble?

GOOD
1. AGG
2. Overall improvement of the defense
3. Students stayed and were loud

BAD
1. Buckshot
2. Running game
3. Offensive line

Honorable Mention- concession lines were awful, attendance was disappointing. It appears the inly way the Bill will see a sellout crowd is when UVA and VT come here.

Sustained success will help. We've won 6 games every year since the 2014 season. Put a 9-10 win team on the field and fans will show up.
