Liberty University says River Ridge Mall rumor is untrue
Liberty University is growing by leaps and bounds, but taking over a local shopping mall apparently is not part of the school's plans.
LU officials say they've been hearing the same rumors a lot of other folks in the community have been talking about that an outside company was going to buy River Ridge Mall and donate the property to Liberty University.
Jerry Falwell Junior says it's just not true.
Liberty is growing at a rapid rate, enough so that they'll top 10,000 students next fall, a full three years ahead of schedule.
Because of that, Liberty has to renew its conditional use permit with the city, and both sides are already talking about issues such as student housing and pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
The school has also floated the idea of donating land for a civic center in the area, that either Campbell County or the city of Lynchburg would pay to build and Liberty would rent out.
Falwell Junior says as the student population grows, the Vines Center is getting crowded and they need more space.
