Your local CBS affiliate check in with Jr. on the much discussed mall rumor:

Liberty University says River Ridge Mall rumor is untrue

Liberty University is growing by leaps and bounds, but taking over a local shopping mall apparently is not part of the school's plans.

LU officials say they've been hearing the same rumors a lot of other folks in the community have been talking about that an outside company was going to buy River Ridge Mall and donate the property to Liberty University.

Jerry Falwell Junior says it's just not true.

Liberty is growing at a rapid rate, enough so that they'll top 10,000 students next fall, a full three years ahead of schedule.

Because of that, Liberty has to renew its conditional use permit with the city, and both sides are already talking about issues such as student housing and pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

The school has also floated the idea of donating land for a civic center in the area, that either Campbell County or the city of Lynchburg would pay to build and Liberty would rent out.

Falwell Junior says as the student population grows, the Vines Center is getting crowded and they need more space.

He said on the radio a company had bought it for what he thinks was 60 million and they bought it to make a profit. In other words, we're not getting it.

doubtful. And it is probably profitable for the current owners. It's got some pretty popular stores in it. It's just got one big empty spot where circuit city used to be. Did that used to be TRBC/LU land? Man, that land is way better than anything we currently have. It wouldnt have been so cramped.

Yes, it used to be our land. The empty CC building had a bid placed by TRBC about 18 months ago for it to be there youth center.

if thats true why is Power Source the middle school youth group room right next to classrooms/track over at Campus North?? If they plans were to use the CC building for the youth wouldn't it make more sense not to waste the money on a new room?? Oh wait...nothing makes sense around here.

I always thought buying the RR area and moving the seminary over there, with a brand new building and perhaps apartments, specifically for the seminary/grad students would be a good idea.

I have never asked about the bid since then, but I would assume that they didn't get it.

This story is far from over. It would be 2 years before moves could be made, so right now...it is true and they are not putting $$$ together getting ready....but in a year or year and a half, you may be hearing something different.

They went through about 3 awful managers that just didn't have a clue...that led to the downfall but was not the only reason
