Does anyone here believe Austin Lewis's targeting penalty was a bit over the top? The rule states that a "defenseless player hit in the neck or head by the crown of the helmet of the one delivering the hit then targeting is called." If you watch Lewis's hit then you will see that it was not near the neck or the head whatsoever. Yes, he led with his head and hit the qb square in the numbers but his head was up. Obviously yall can tell that I didn't not approve of the call, ha.

I agree with you. I don't think it meet a clear precondition of the rule.

It was a ludicrous call - eyes were up, face mask first - didn’t launch - textbook hit - cant believe replay didn’t overturn.

Joe Dailey is a horrible OC in my opinion. he is just not aggressive enough in his play calling or he abandons what is working. I'm not going to come down on Wimbo because preparing for the triple option in a week is hard to do. We had our chances for sure.

I thought the targeting call on Lewis was correct. I beleived he led with the crown. As soon as I saw it, I said out loud, "He's gone."

I wonder if Dailey is restricted by Gill. I don't know how this staff operates. Even if an OC has playcalling duties, the head coach can and often does step in. No clue about this staff, but at the very leats the buck stops with the HC.

Also, I heard HCTG postgame discussed his reasoning for the run call on 3rd & 15. Something like, he planned to go for it on 4th down if we got 4-5 yards, making it about 3rd & 10. Why not throw on both downs, given where you are on the field? I just don't get that thinking. Feels more and more like the evolution of the game has passed this staff, offensively.

I´m with you Smoothie. Buckshot has saved his butt by making chicken salad out of his chickin poop offense. Totally predictable and lacks even the tiniest bit of deception or creativity.

We are too conservative on offense. We have playmakers. Get them the ball.

Has anyone noticed that we have very little production out of Special teams on returning punts and kickoffs ?

There could be other factors for the special teams. Kickers are routinely booming kicks deep into the end zone or squibbing to keep it away from potentially dangerous returners, while punters arent simply blasting "turnover kicks" to be returned. I watched a story on punter Sam Cook (or is it Koch...i forget) and he has different punts similar to golfers having different clubs. College punters are the same way now. Why don't you see tons of punt and kick return touchdowns these days in general BC?

I agree with you. HCTG doesn't know how to use his weapons. It seems like he's wasting the talents of Buckshot and our receivers, trying to establish a running game that we don't have. He definitely hasn't utilizedbour passing game to its full potential.

Except he said himself he’d been preparing for it since February, not to mention the past 4 or 5 years of preparation he’s done against it for Brevard, KSU, etc.

Buckshot easily could be a 10,000 yard passer

I think it's important to establish some kid of running game. Having said this, that doesn't mean running off tackle with undersized backs. There are a variety of quick passes to backs which are really "running" plays. They are blocked the same way and would get the ball into our backs hands in space and allow them to operate. We did run a couple of those but I would like to see more. As many have said on this board, we need to call plays to our strength. It's a philosophy of coaching that has to be intentional. We are not Alabama who can fit their players into an already established system. We have to mold our system around our players and put them in the best situation to succeed.

Did not think lewis was targeting. Alves was by rule but its so hard to view that as targeting since hes a punter but thar doesnt matter to the rule.

I cant give either coordinaor a break. I still think we have solid position coaches but 1 and mediocore to bad coordinators.

Army just beat 3-0 Hawaii, 28 to 21. They were able to slow down their fairly potent top five offense. Hawaii did a bit better on defense, but there were a lot of similarities to LUs game..our 3rd quarter was their first, and they didn't overthrow the wide open td pass like we did, bringing their total to 21.

Final score 44-17. We already knew North Texas was good. We definately have our work cut out for us, but I wouldn´t put a ton of stock in that margin. Arkansas basically self-destructed with 6 turnovers and a punt coverage breakdown.

Because he made no signal whatsoever, the play was perfectly legal. If he had made any motion at all with his hand, he would not be allowed to run with the ball. On the other hand, in order to be protected, the fair catch signal needs to be clear and unambiguous. Otherwise you are fair game.

For all you guys hammering me for wanting to push the envelope in 7 years to P5 heavy teams in order to either get invited to P5 or get in an 8 man playoff - UNT is the example of what a great coach with a great system can do for a Perrenial Loser in a short period of time in Modern Football - LU has the financial resources ( aka pay top $ for a coach ) facilities and National Recruiting leverage ( much bigger pool than BYU who has won an NC in an era much tougher than todays environment ) and just upset # 6 on the road and UNT just beat an SEC team with half the quality of players 1 year removed from an atrocious team - Troy just beat Nebraska - LU doesn’t have to go through 30 years of building to become what most programs used to have to go through. With the right coach and recruiting classes - LU can strike lightning in a bottle to be a top 10 team ( yes there will be ugly years on both sides of it ) but what is the point of scheduling 4 P5 teams if you aren’t going to compete in all of them - ( 2019,2020 etc ) schedule it for 6-7 and make the right hires and get after it. Otherwise - schedule 1 P5 and try and be a great G5 team with 1 loss - ( boring and I hope we don’t ) but I don’t want to be something in the middle 10-15 years from now.
