What it sounds like to me is that because we're going FBS, we will be allowed 1 more on field coach on the staff starting in a little over a month, on Jan 1, 2018. It sounds like TG can keep his current staff, and STILL add a new defensive coordinator to start Jan. 1, and just shift the Wimberly and the rest of the defensive staff around. At least reading between the lines that's what I think is happening.

What you are suggesting is possible. Of course, that doesn't mean it will happen. We currently have 4 defensive assistants compared to 5 on offense, so the additional coach will almost certainly be on D. 2 years ago TG relieved Stamn of OC duties and promoted Daley. Would he do that with Wimbo and hire a new DC? One can hope.

I suggested this a month ago. Once we knew there were 2 years left i had a strong feeling we wouldnt pull the plug since were still paying layer and toman. I think layer is done or will
Be done after this year. There is not an in house candidate to he the dc in my opinion. Again. Not sure how good of dc you can get on a 1 year deal tho.

I love that we turn people into verbs. I laughed at this.

Unfortunately he is at least for next year. If there wasn't an early December signing period...............................................

I'd heard one of the reasons - along with the money - they kept this staff is because we're having a good recruiting year. To me, that's about as shortsighted as you can get but it is what it is. We'll be complaining for at least another year.

Early Signing period is a new factor in timing of coaches being hired and fired. Last year we got the vote of confidence from Jerry, we have not gotten any thing on Gill specifically.

Looking at top end talent, I would agree that QB stands out as a massive improvement. Looking at depth the units as a whole I would say most areas have improved.

Kicking
WR
DBs

These three units have gotten better in a major way in Gill's tenure.

I think kicking is the same as when Rocco was here - Mat Bevins
Wide receivers a little better (more depth) - Petey Peterson, Dante Shells, Pat Kelly
DBs are not as good as Walt Aiken and Kevin Fogg, Jacob Hagen

I think QB, WR(look at how many of our guys were in the top 10 in Big South Stats for Receiving. . . 4!!!) K/P, and water boy :D

If you look at the Jucos we have been offering and then you look at Gill's desire to bring in mid-year enrollees and most of them as Jucos that may have been a factor in Jones and Mckinney leaving. If we get Roy Yancey from Arizona Western that will be HUGE!! He is rated as a 3 star juco linebacker.

Plus, Coach DeArmon was out that way yesterday!! And now he is headed to alabama according to twitter. I still think we have a good shot at getting Cardavion Myers too!!!

I feel about like I felt the day after the last election. This is the guy we're stuck with, let's make the best of it. But I have about the same level of confidence in his ability.

Retaining a coach because of ‘Early Signing Period’ is silly. Should not even factor into the equation

I was told it was less the early signing period and more the overall recruiting class. My gut is this is something they wanted leaked out to distract from the money being the real issue. If we say we're excited about the recruits coming in then there's hope that things will get better.

As an Alumni, I will always pull for Liberty's success. But the news of Gill's return is very disheartening. I have never personally meet him, but from what I've read he seems to be a great Christian man and witness and for that I admire and praise him. But as a HC I feel that he is average at best. One only has to look at his record to come to that conclusion. We can only speculate as to why a change was not made. I believe that a coach should be given time to show what he can do. But I think 6 years is more than enough to show if there is going to be any improvement. I think that Gill's numerous 6-5 seasons show that that about his peak. I wish nothing but success for Liberty and Gill next year. But that's my heart speaking, my gut says we're in for a long season next year. There will not be a Presbyterian or Gardner Webb to put in the win column.

Stil a stupid reason. That’s basically saying whoever they brought in couldn’t recruit. So using that philosophy you could never fire a coach.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not unhappy Gill is back. I’d just like to see how he addresses the obvious issues on Defense and the OL

Im not saying it isn't a possibility that Gill is the coach next year, but he's basically an interim right now. Better to have him right now than fire him and not get who we want when they get into their off season and wind up tied to a 4 year contract with our 3rd choice.

I would not say either our kicking or DBs have improved. Probert can kick, but was poorly utilized (did not attempt a FG in 5 consecutive games, and then surprise, surprise, struggled when called on.). We had a bunch of FG and extra points blocked as well.

We have talent and depth at DB, but as mentioned, the previous standard was high. Also, too many
flat out blown coverages resulting in ridiculously easy TDs.

This sounds logical.
