I just thought of this.....Shouldn't Dunton's fate be decided by Dunton??? In theory, if he does well then he would stay; however, if he does poorly
(hard to argue with that) then he is canned

Maybe Falwell is taking a step back from personnel decisions after what happened the last time that he opted to give a coach an extension (in spite of everyone else's objections). 1-10 ring a bell?

Plus, those who know how Dunton arrived on campus this tenure knows that he's Falwell's boy. When I read that Falwell isn't going to make the personnel decision, I may be reading in to it but I see Falwell basically saying that he's not going to stand up for him if / when the axe comes.

I've been one of Dunton's staunchest supporters on this board, because I had to deal with three years of Mel Hankinson. To tell you how bad Mel Hankinson was as a coach, use these three anecdotes:

1) With a week left to go in the season, Coach Hankinson proudly announced that he was going to phase in the second-part of his defense (from November to February, he was only playing with 50% of his defensive scheme).... Why wasn't that done in, I dunno, the day after Midnight Madness?

2) In his last year, Hankinson whined about having 9 freshmen and sophomores on his team. Two of them played garbage minutes. Three of them were at least 21, and one was 23 (usually, seniors are in the 21-22 age). That same year, our women's team (which won the BS, of course) had 11.

3) Liberty inserted a player into the starting lineup in three straight games, but those were the only minutes that player played all game. When asked about this, the Coach replied that "we did well the one game he started, so we wanted to keep that rotation" (as if having Glyn Turner in for three minutes at the start of the game was the magic key for the rest of the game).

So, Hanky was a disaster, and I gave Dunton the benefit of the doubt. Dunton repaid that by bringing in some good players, and one important factor that no one isn't mentioning: a guy named Bob Davies as assistant coach. From what I've heard over the years was that Bob Davies really was the brains behind our winning at the beginning of Dunton's tenure. When he went, so did our nice little winning percentage. But that's besides the point.

Regardless, under Dunton's watch, the program won the championship in his second year. For that, I figured he should be immune from criticism for some time (four years, I argued).

However, with Dunton's contract expiring this year, it really isn't feasible to give him a one-year extension because no one in their right mind would take it (although it's strange because we ask every member of our faculty to do it).

So we have to examine what to do. We have to ask ourselves if Randy Dunton is the guy we want on the sidelines for the next three to five years. Can Dunton out-coach Gregg Marshall? Can he out-recruit Winthrop?

After the debacle that was the Winthrop game (a thirty point loss and then didn't have their best player), I think the answer is clearly "no".

And, come March, I hope I'm wrong.

With that said, we have at least 3 options, if RD is on his way out:

(1) bring back Bob Davis or another former LU assistant coach or alumnus who is now a head coach elsewhere
(2) promote one of our current LU assistant coaches (such as your UVa guy) to head coach
(3) do a nation-wide search like other colleges do, and have enough confidence in Barber to pick the best man for the job.

I almost feel like it's the big city press...we're coming up with 3 page responses to a one sentence answer....all he's saying is it's not up to him. Like Chris said, of course he can veto anything that he feels like wont be in the best interest for the university but there's a 1% chance JB will do something that will call for that.

Bottom line, there's still time to turn this thing around...it's still in RD's hands...he can change all of this with a few wins

Do you really invision that happening this year? Maybe it's an unrealistic expectation, but if we don't finish at least second in the conference and place second in the tournament, I'd say it's time to look elsewhere for a head coach.

It's just like Chris said...there's still a lot of season left to be played. No, they don't look to good right now...but the pieces are there so I'm not counting them out until they lose in the tourny.

OK fair warning. I did drag this up but hey I am not as addicted as I used to be.

JF's comments in this article, to me, reiterate the fact that sometimes JF and the TRUTH are strangers. I will break it down thusly. He pretty much let light into the decisions over the last 30 years. Yep HE MADE THEM ALL. After denial after denial and after denial that he had ANYTHING to do with ANY hiring/firing decision in the athletic department or any budgeting responsibility he comes out and says "He feels he can hand over those decisisions now". It was a good lawyer who once said "Were you lying than? Or are you lying now?" He said he had NOTHING to do with Firing JM or MoHa or the hiring of SR. A nice case study and you don't even have to be a conspiracy theroist on this is how the firing of MH (MEL) was handled. Does anyone believe that he HAD to be fired THAT day and that the only way to get a hold of him was a piece of paper on his chair??? Let's see, based on what we just read was that an AD decision or a JF decision?
Secondly, what a slap in the face to all of the past AD's. He basically called them all incompotent boobs. Only HE knew what was best for the Athletic Department, not these mere mortals with whom their previous athletic experience pales in comparison to his great knowledge. Experience shows that these men were actually VERY compotent in what they were doing. One started an academic major in the field, one is a consultant in the field (OK He was also the 'mulligan' and we all get those) the other two are heading D1 athletic programs. Hmmmmmm. Yep, I guess these people knew how to run a D1 athletic department.
This is in NO WAY an admonishment of the current athletic administration. I think JB can do an OUTSTANDING job. But it leaves one to wonder what would have happened had the purse strings been opened and the freedom been given to previous administrations? I like the direction (For the most part) this department is heading. (Notable exception: How many females are either staffers or coaches???) The "honeymoon" period has been good with all of the capital improvements, increase in funding, etc.
But, as the lawyer says "Was he lying then? or is he lying now?"

Thank you. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Should RD be fired? threads!!! Have a nice day. And yes, I do feel better having got that off my (rather manly, hairy) chest!!! :D

And I still luv your 'stache Construction Man from Village People.

Just a tad. But it can be said about most of his decisions. THat is my one HUGE hang up (ok of of two) I have with the good reverend. I know the term hypocricy is over used (and often misspelled) but that is what I see it as. I don't mind the little unintentional hypociscy, but the blatant premeditated really chaffes me under the saddle

Are you serious with all of this???? JB has raised more money then all of our previous heads put together...heck he beat them first week on the job...but that's prob. b/c we've had some before that felt like it wasn't part of their job. They said so in a meeting of about 25 people, letting everyone know the day they have to start raising money is the day they leave...so please don't come on here with that crap, theres a reason they didnt have money...they chose to over look that part in the job description. Also please dont use JB's increased salary as a motive to raise money, that was given to him b/c his past proves he'll bring that in times 10 not to mention the day to day decisions we can trust him with (which after living through some of the previous ideas is priceless in most minds up here).

I used to like this identity better...not so much anymore

I can tell you that "that part" was not in their job description. Without getting into who said what when, Brokeback has a legitimate point and I don't think he was knocking JB at all. LU Athletics has evolved to the point where everyone involved (how's that for diplomacy?) realizes that we need a DI AD and JB fits that bill.
