Occasionally. My favorite styles are jazz and country though. I hoping to get Darius Rucker tickets for September in Virginia Beach

well that was hilarious. tom morello is an unconventional fringe wizard and slash got lucky.

Prince wasn't a top 10 but he was pretty good when he turned it on. quite frankly his music wasn't interesting to me but i could appreciate his skill. same with guys like satriani and vai. appreciate skill level, can't take much of the music.

I agree with Satriani I feel that way about Clapton. I SHOULD like him but he's never done much for me.

Outlier here, but I actually enjoy a couple of Satch's albums. What hurts him is that a) his songwriting skills are not up to par for mass-consumption, and b) he's a soloist and was never in a real band (I said REAL band, sorry chicken foot).

BUT, I think his influence in the way people play the guitar goes much further than any of the others mentioned.

That's Eddie Van Halen for me. He was an incredible guitarist in his prime, yet I don't really like his music.

I get that. I've even heard him called a one trick pony before. I've always admired who he said was the best guitar player he knew. Even though I don't care for the music that much.

I love the blues heavy rock guitarists like Hendrix, Duane Allman, SRV (love his playing, but not his vocals), early Black Keys and White Stripes era Jack White. You can clearly hear the influences in their music, but they all made it their own.

Yep. Blues heavy rock is awesome.

the reason guys latch onto blues is its fairly simple progression. a good beginning canvas if you will. i got to see EVH probalby 15 years ago and he did a 15 minute eruption. some of the things he did in that 15 minutes i'd never seen before. the one thing about EVH in that concert was everything was studio quality. he was flawless.

alumnus, satriani is probably the most tolerable of the 2.

I am going to try and dismiss Adam's vocal diss of SRV considering his well-stated appreciation of Eddie Vedder. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Stevie Ray was blues to the core in his vocal stylings.

I'm with you on Clapton, Haize. I am actually down with Satriani as mood music but only in bite-sized chunks on occassion. He took the genius of Eddie and made it much smoother. I agree with ALUmnus that is why he was so influential even today.

If you want to throw out an axe man who blew you away but didn't produce music with enough hooks to be truly popular then I have to offer up to you Yngwie Malmsteen. That dude was incredibly skillful and fast.

yngwie is probably the best of the 3 instrumentalists mentioned. i'm far removed from my infatuation with the genre however.

Yngwie is incredible. I remember in HS he held the world record for Fastest Guitar player. Not sure how you measure that. Certainly not by 40 speed. Ha. His problem is that he is a Mega Diva and does not 'play' (figuratively) well with others. His talent is still unrivaled. I saw him interviewed on That Metal Show and he still brought it. He's also features for a bit on that 11 part series on Heavy Metal music. Can't recall the name off hand I just wish he could have been able to work with someone and been exposed more to the general population

Edit: here it is. Metal: A Head Bangers Journey

Touché. I should have said that I don't love his songwriting. His vocals are fine, I just don't enjoy most of his stuff because I find a lot of his songs to be quite boring. I never claimed that Vedder was a great vocalist. I like his vocals, but there are several that are better from his same era (Cornell is the gold standard). Heck, I like Corgan's vocals as well and nobody calls him a great vocalist.

Steve Lukather of Toto is pretty solid. There are so many names you can throw in the hat of best guitarists it's silly. It really comes down to what does each person appreciate. I think it's good to appreciate anyone who can give a solo good drama. When a solo can rise and fall and almost tell a story it's amazing. A lot of the names listed here can do that.

Seeing Chris Cornell in Charlotte tonight with my brother. Can't wait. Also, check your TicketMaster accounts because you probably have vouchers to a bunch of upcoming shows due to them settling an overcharge lawsuit. Between the wife and I, we got vouchers good for pairs of tickets to 9 upcoming shows.

Definitely one of my favorite singers from my generation (along with Neil Diamond).

He puts on a great show. Saw him back in 99. Funny story. I was in the front row and he comes out on stage and then looks at me and says, "I didn't realize you'd be here tonight." He then proceeded to go get a beer and bring it to me, shook my hand and told me to enjoy the show.

I'm pretty sure he had me confused with someone else. LOL.

My wife and I were talking about the dirty of shows around this year'. Of course we opted not to do The Who and AC/DC cancelled but here it is June and we don't really have anything on the schedule. Had I been able to work it out I'd love to have seen Kings X in Greensboro but I was just getting back from SF so that was out. I guess we will just have to see what the Fall brings. I Head Welch going to be performing a concert or just speaking when he is at LU?

Excellent vocals tonight, as always. It's amazing how strong his voice is at his age. I think he's lost just a hair off the top of his vocal range, but he still sounds better than 99% of singers out there.

After a LONG drought it looks like we are going to end the year with a flourish
STYX is a strong possibility in Charlottesville. But it's a weeknight and SOMEONE unretired and has school the next day
Does anyone know if Brian Welch is playing or just speaking at LU? He keeps popping up on my App but no mention of what's happening

Just bought Bob Dylan tickets for Roanoke in November. He won't be around much longer
Cheap Trick is the night before and depending on someone's practice schedule will determine whether we go or not
AC/DC and Billy Joel are also on the radar but it comes down to someone's season schedule. Ha

He was in DC 2 weeks ago but we had to miss because of a funeral. (Not ours)
He is playing some dates in NYC but we are looking at Dec 17. Take the train up on Saturday and back Sunday. Obviously a quick trip but we can get some 'shopping' in on Canal Street, go to the concert and see some sites. BUT someone may have a Tournament that weekend so.....
