Yeah Dave Armstrong and me will probably be doing the Texas tour. Dave Barnett will be in there with me too I'm sure. Maybe even Ron Thulin if he isn't busy in the studio in West Palm. I definitely want to do a game or two in San Antonio and Houston. El Paso? I love coach Floyd but not really wanting to get out there if I don't have to.

With the confirmation that Jurch and Karwowski are not going to be Flames, our scholarship status for 16 is somewhat clearer, but some questions remain. Will Hoffman be getting a schollie (as I have heard from a reliable, but unofficial source), and what is happening with Baxter-Bell? I feel certain that if Calvin gets a scholarship, it will be just for this year, so it would be as if he were a Senior and we will have it to recruit for next year. If Baxter-Bell did not qualify, as it appears, IMHO we can´t guarantee him a scholarship next year either.

With Johnson and Fields graduating, we will have 8 scholarship players with eligibility remaining, leaving 5 scholarships. One of those will be going to early commit Josiah Talbert, which leaves 4. Signing either Brock Gardner or Clayton Hughes, the 2 athletic SFs we have offered will be a high priority. You have to believe we will try to land one or more bigs, but we haven´t offered any yet and there´s really no word at all on that.

Read that Hughes has scheduled an official visit for Central Florida on 9/3 and is scheduling an official with William & Mary.

Looks like Gardner picked up a recent offer from Coach Tim Floyd at UTEP on top of his UC Davis offer.

Still surprised that there have been no other 2016 offers, especially to bigs, but I don't mind waiting to make sure we get the specific type of guy Coach McKay wants. Talbert brothers with Gardner/Hughes would give a lot of athletic versatility at the 2/3/4 that can shoot it combined with some quick guards looks like the start of a good roster for the future. Just need to secure post presence to protect the paint and rebound.

After doing some digging, there are 3 big men we have not offered, but have expressed interest in.

Cameron Johnson 6´8¨ 270 Bennetsville SC
http://verbalcommits.com/players/cameron-johnson-sc
He has received interest from a number of schools, but his only offer to date is from D2 Johnson C Smith

Quinterious Jones 6´8¨ 245 Anderson, SC
http://verbalcommits.com/players/quinterious-jones
He has an offer from Hampton

Tyler Creammer 6´10¨ From Parketon, NC but attending the Miller School in VA
http://verbalcommits.com/players/tyler-creammer
Tyler has multiple offers, including 3 from Ivy League schools, so it looks like he is an excellent student

I know the initial interest in Creammer came from Layer, so it´s hard to know if Ritchie is still pursuing him. The other 2 seem to be more recent.

He has a 7´4¨ wingspan. With that kind of length, being ¨only¨ 6´7¨or 6´8¨ is irrelevant. Long arms are what you want in the pack line defense.
Don't doubt the talent scouting ability of :flamingdevil I didn't even look at the stats. Just name and the power of :flamingdevil

We have offered 6´9¨ SF/PF John Fulkerson from Christ School in Kingsport, TN. This is the same school the Plumlee brothers went to, although their coach, David Gaines, who won 9 state championships, has retired.

http://verbalcommits.com/players/john-fulkerson

http://www.citizen-times.com/story/spor ... /30464165/

Fulkerson has an impressive 21 offers including Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson and about half the schools in the BSC. With all that he still is only rated a 2 star recruit, which tells you someting about how much that means.

Kid apparently has some pretty serious hops. He broke the school record with 93 blocks last year.

Fulkerson is an interesting prospect. He has more offers than a lot of 5 star recruits. He was inicially considered to be a mid-major player and got a bunch of offers from those schools (including 4 of our BSC competitors). This summer he really hit his stride in AAU ball and the majors are now offering. I´m afraid we may have gotten into the game too late to have a chance now. He is a pretty hot commodity, but we shall see.

Stavian Allen, who signed with LU for 2014, failed to qualify, and is now playing JUCO at Talahassee CC, has received his first offer as a 2016 recruit from Tennessee Tech. He is a long, super athletic 6´8¨ F who was a dunking machine in HS and AAU. From everything I have heard, he would fit right in at LU, and on the court he would be an excellent defender and no doubt a fan favorite.

Fulkerson could bring some size and shot blocking which would be nice. Still needs a lot more muscle to battle inside but there is time. Here is a video with some Fulkerson highlights from this summer.

Telling time for the staff will be the beginning of September, I think it is the 9th, when coaches can start visiting recruits at their schools again. Where Coach McKay and staff go to visit will tell a lot. Hopefully we will also hear of some recruits scheduling their visits to Lynchburg as well. Big month ahead for solidifying our 2016 class.

I don´t know if anyone else cares, but I am an admitted basketball recruiting geek, and I find it interesting how widely the approaches coaches take to making scholarship offers varies. Looking at the BSC, there are 3 schools who have taken what, for lack of a better word, I would call an ¨agressive¨approach. Radford and High Point each have made 22 offers to recruits in the class of 2016 and Winthrop has made 19.

At the other side of the spectrum is Presby, with only 4 offers and Liberty with 7.

Results? It´s early, but to date those 3 ¨agressive¨coaches have a total of 2 verbal commits, both to Mike Jones at Radford. That´s 2 for 63. Presby and LU, with a total of 11 offers, also have a total of 2 (one each). Winthrop has also offered 11 2017 prospects and is 0 for 30 so far. Cherry at HP has offered 7 in the 2017 class and is 0 for 29 . Gee at Longwood is tied for the most 2017 offers with 11. He is 1 for 20 overall with a 2016 verbal. Liberty has offered 4 for 2017 with the only commit in the conference coming from Jay Barber.

Now before anyone accuses me of bragging on McKay, I realize that early signing period is still almost 3 months away and our 2 verbals come from the brother of a current player and the son of our AD, which probably had something to do with their committing so early. At the end of the day all that matters is who you sign to NLIs and whether they can help you when they get on campus, but I did find the disparity intriguing.

That´s just the rinky-dink BSC of course. Some of the high major coaches make Cherry and Jones look like pikers. Buzz Williams at VT has 16 offers out for 1 schollie in 2016, 41 for 2017 and 10 for 2018.

I agree oldflame. It really is interesting to see the different approaches taken by D1 coaches. No doubt for some programs, including Liberty, it seems like an offer is a legitimate "we would sign you right now" offer. For other programs, offers today are like letters used to be. They are just a sign of serious interest. Throwing out 20 offers in a class where you may have 3 available scholarships seems crazy but it definitely is happening more and more. For smaller programs it seems like they are just targeting a lot of bigger fish, hoping one might end up taking it. For larger programs, it really is confusing, especially to the recruit. Tough to know where you stand with a program if they are "offering" so many guys.

Excited to see how the next week or two plays out for the Liberty staff. September 9th starts up the NCAA recruiting period where coaches can visit players at their school. Will be interesting to see where the staff travels. Hopefully we will hear of some official visits being scheduled to Lynchburg as well.

Top wing recruits Clayton Hughes and Brock Gardner have started taking official visits. Gardner took his first official visit to the Air Force last weekend and Hughes will be at Central Florida this weekend. Hope to get these guys on campus where Flames Nation can put on a show welcoming them and they can see the facilities first hand.

Was reported last night on twitter that 2016 F Will Hrubes would be visiting Liberty on Sept 19-20. Don't know much about him. Listed as 6-5, 195 shooting guard.
