He's somebody that by all indications buys into our mission and he happens to have some strong credentials to boot. I love when we can find that combination in our staff hires.

Nebraska fan here. I was doing some research on Coach Brown's move and ran across this forum. I registered specifically to point out that this person here either has some great insider knowledge or they're a really, really good guesser.

Kudos on the prediction.

Correct. Coach Brown is a very good coach, and his understanding of the game allows him to coach multiple positions. Tommy Armstrong, Nebraska's QB, credited Brown for teaching a brilliant stiff-arm that Armstrong used in a highlight play last year. No position Brown's ever coached at Nebraska has been a weak link.

I think your kids are going to really like Coach Brown. He'll be tough on them, but they'll run through walls for him when it's time.

I'll be poking my head in here from time to time to see how it's going with you guys. Too many Huskers on your coaching staff to ignore. :D

Tressel, Pelini, Brown Asked to Attend LGBTQIA Sensitivity Training

NO problem with how he feels about certain things, that is his right, the criticism starts with HOW you convey how YOU feel about it towards everyone else. They have a right to believe in what you say the same way he does. DOESN't matter if he is RIGHT or WRONG. Yes, we all KNOW the bible says its wrong not disputing that. BOTTOM line is the way he is expressing his displeasure with it. He doesn't have to like it, but you can't and should'nt belittle or offend those of different views.
Job Description says FOOTBALL COACH not MINISTER so pls Coach Football and don't try and force what YOU believe as right onto everyone else. Yes, there is a big difference between trying to force someone to believe what you believe vs telling or explaining how you feel about another person's particular lifestyle. Those who want to listen will and those who don't won't.

Agree with your premise that arguing with someone who holds a view that homosexual marriage is normal is futile, especially if you brow beat them with the Bible. Was that what he was doing? And the evidence that he forced someone to believe what he believe is . . . . ? It's possible that I may have missed that. LU has some bold believers who are respectful of others versus milketoast Christians who are afraid to say anything for fear of not being liked and be accused of being a homophobe. We are blessed to have such men and women coaching who have those bold beliefs and are not shy about expressing it. They are great role models for our student athletes. We are to be light in a dark world. As Turner Gill would say "To God be the glory, go Flames". Welcome Brother Ron.

No insider info but I grew up in Neb so I obviously keep close tabs on any of the guys associated with TO's staff. I like to joke (seriously) that Lib has more connections with the Osborne coaching tree then Nebraska and that is a great thing for Liberty.

Great great hire!!!

Also Brown will have sound bites that sound bad. But as evidenced by statements from a gay player and another Muslim player they have nothing but respect for Ron and he's never come across as offensive to them.

You mixed a lot of pronouns together there – “he, you, they” and it was a little hard to follow.

But I think I get your point: a Christian in a position of authority as an instructor should respect of all opinions, including dissenting ones, and not force his beliefs upon others in an offensive way. I agree.

I have 1.5 points of disagreement: :)

1 - EVERY CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE A VERBAL WITNESS THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST AND THAT THE BIBLE IS TRUTH. If a Christian ("Follower of Christ") is unable or unwilling to testify about the tenets of the faith then what good is he or she doing? Yes, our actions (the non-verbal) can "speak" volumes as well but there is no explicit instruction in the Bible where believers are exempt from communicating the truth verbally. In fact, it's just the opposite.

No matter his vocation, every believer SHOULD BE a minister, proclaiming the truth and caring for others. For example, the influence of a football coach is significant. Practically speaking, he is also a life coach because he has a relationship with the athletes, on and off the field. His duties just don't fall neatly into a public job description. A caring coach is available to his athletes 24/7.

Consider the demographics for a moment. A majority of the players are Black and more than likely were born to a single mom and grew up without a father in his home. Throw in the divorce rate and the four-decade decline in the marriage rate and you have a lot of young men of all races that have not had a consistent male role model in their lives. Sports, like football, give these guys some structure and male leadership that they don’t have elsewhere. A dedicated coach is absolutely teaching these guys truths and principles that should help to successfully guide them the rest of their lives.

Coach Ron Brown without apology makes this his mission. Upon leaving Nebraska and taking the Youngstown State job, an article reports; “In the future, Brown said he would continue to hold his Christian faith high on display, and has already been promised Pelini's continued support as well as that of the school's administration.

Wherever I'm at, that's how it's got to be,’ Brown said. ‘I caught flak for it in Nebraska, got in trouble for it numerous times, but I'd do it all over again.’”

http://www.christianexaminer.com/articl ... /48182.htm

Those are the words of a Christian who takes his faith seriously and cares about the young men that he is instructing.

.5 - Here’s my .5 point of disagreement. I don’t know for sure, but I think your warning regarding the intolerant and offensive Christian coach who doesn’t respect the views of others as he meddles in their personal lives doesn’t apply in this case.

I am sure that we will hear more of the real story later on, but I believe that Ron Brown is a victim of prejudice, plain and simple.

Here’s his welcome on campus from the campus newspaper….”Ron Brown is known for somewhat neolithic views on the homosexual community and a love of expressing those beliefs publicly; an evangelical Christian who was known to preach to his team. He has also told the Associated Press, “that based on the Bible, homosexuality, the lifestyle of homosexuality, is a sin.” It isn’t exactly surprising that he stirred up some controversy on college campuses.

Though YSU’s athletics department has remained tight-lipped about the whole affair and an official announcement has been made, Ron Brown himself has confirmed his role as the new assistant coach. He is, apparently, currently working on campus.

But this editorial isn’t about denouncing this man’s views and their latent threat to YSU
…,”

http://www.thejambar.com/a-damning-sile ... ron-brown/

“Hello, my name is Ron Brown, your new associate head football coach and I’m a threat to YSU! Thanks for the warm welcome!”

The indications are that at his January hiring, he was opposed because of who he is and what he believes, not because of any specific actions done in Ohio and not because he doesn’t have the football credentials. The LGBT activists simply did not want a strong and committed Christian having such a high profile platform as associate head coach at their university.

It may well be that Ron Brown left Youngstown State University of his own accord. But it is clear that he faced prejudice and unfair opposition from people that did not know him and assumed the worst about him from the very beginning.

But, such prejudice is acceptable these days. As you know, “tolerance” runs only one way on most university campuses and those clamoring for “tolerance” are themselves the most narrow minded and intolerant of others and their dissenting views.

In any case, Youngstown State’s loss will be our gain. We get a coach with a wealth of experience whose one of us and will make our guys better football players and better men.

I thought this was a done deal!!?!? This must be a very complex and sensative hire process for program as a whole. Makes me wonder if having the new guy come in and make more $$ than everyone on staff other than Gill has created some friction!?!?

My guess is there won't be anything said on our end unless all the I's are dotted and all the T's are crossed. Can you imagine the bad PR if issued a release saying he was hired and then days later (if not sooner), they had to withdraw the release and be like "oops...our bad" or something to that effect.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Given his resume and experience, what does his hiring and assumed recompense salary do to the salary structure for the other assistant coaches? Will there be promises to adjust things upward in the future? Will Ron Brown give LU a "FCS discount?"

If he does come to LU, he will be fielding offers from major schools by January. I hope we get him for more than just one season.

I agree... Hopefully they structure his salary in a way that would encourage him to stay for a few years. It's clear that he can be dedicated to one program for a ver very very long time. If he does actually come here and we have continued increased success I wouldn't be surprised if 6-10 years from now Gill has moved on and he's our new head coach.
