This has been a source of constant discussion down here the past couple of weeks. While today's announcement certainly puts pressure of the league to respond in some fashion, adding two teams of little value is not generally viewed as the answer. Several Big XII sources are leaking that Cincinnati & Memphis are alleged the two schools considered to have the best shot. BYU, Colorado State (who just announced a new $200M on-campus stadium yesterday) and Houston are the others in the discussion.

No one in any of the Big XII circles is enthusiastic about any of the available options. They missed out on poaching ACC schools by dragging their feet and now are left with a bunch of undesirable candidates.

I honestly believe that they will hold steady at 10 for at least another year. Frankly I think this puts the Big XII as unlikely allies with the G5 schools in order to expand the playoff to at least 8 teams so they won't get worked again down the road.

Under current NCAA rules, a conference must have at least two six-team divisions to stage a conference championship game. A league with fewer teams can apply for a waiver from the NCAA to have one.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Sunday that he and ACC commissioner John Swofford have already talked to the other Power 5 leagues about getting the Big 12 a waiver.

"It's clear that we were penalized for not having a postseason championship game, and it would have been nice to have been told that ahead of time," Bowlsby said. "We made the impression that we had a different model, but it wasn't one that was going to penalize us. I think it's clear that it did, and I think it was even said that it did. That will cause us to go back to the drawing board a little bit and talk about whether or not we need to think about a different model."

Bowlsby said the Big 12 might have to explore the possibility of adding at least two teams to expand to 12 members. BYU officials have openly expressed their desire to join the Big 12, and Cincinnati and Boise State might be other possibilities for Big 12 expansion.

"We may get a change that would allow us to have a playoff of fewer than 12, but I think this situation will certainly be a catalyst for discussion and we'll have to weigh whether this is substantial enough to add institutions," Bowlsby said. "Those are multifaceted decisions, and it isn't just about having a conference football playoff. But it's certainly a major consideration."

I would love to see Big XII add BYU and for traveling purposes Cincy.mmi think BYU brings a lot to the table. WVU is just sitting out here on an island in the Eastern time zone so picking up Cincy would be helpful. If Im the other schools I would be clamoring for a Championship game. The money they lost from not having one this year and not having a team in the play off has gotta be substantial in dollars and exposure.

Thoughts?
And what great men's bball programs did Georgia Southern, Texas State, UT-Arlington, UT-San Antonio, Georgia State or Appy State have when they received their invites? What good did a great men's bball program do Kansas when the Big XII was on the verge of dissolution?

That's not mediocre, or bad. That's dead weight in the second revenue sport. Dead weight is tough to carry.
It certainly doesn't help our case. But I also don't think that it is keeping us out of the Sun Belt.

1) Hawaii, UAB, dropping football possibly.

2) Big 12 needing more teams so they can have a championship game.

3) Sun Belt Still wanting to expand when the time is right.

Are these the 3 biggest factors in LU getting an invite ?

Those are all factors to getting an opportunity. Getting an invite is going to depend on many other things that have been mentioned in this thread.

The only league where I see MBB really hurting us badly is with CUSA where hoops is their bread & butter. It would be close to a non-factor for either Sun Belt or MAC should they be considering us based on departures from their ranks.

I know one thing that definitely doesnt factor in...message boards. I mean we can talk about all this til the cows come home and what is good and what sucks the big fat one, but really at the end of the day, we don't have any pull on the process, the folks on the sun belt board don't, the folks on AGS don't...none of us.

I mean, message boards have their purpose, and that is to discuss any number of things, but at the end of the day, I really don't think Jerry Jr or Karl Benson or whoever is going to look on here aNd think, "well, bluejacket said thus and so," or "Purple Haize said this," or "bjwilliams said this," or "SuperJon said this," and somehow use that to craft his decision on a matter. Imagine how much Benson would be hammered if he said, " Well, we decided to extend an invite to thus and such school because we read their fan message board and we liked what the fans had to say"

At least we agree that Benson spends a majority of his time hammered.
