St Francis. Who? St. Francis. Of New York? No. Of PA? Yes. Are they the Red Raiders or the Red Flash? I don’t know. This conversation seemed to be prevalent in the Vines Center on Monday. Everyone was well aware of Conference USA’s lower tiered East Carolina Pirates. That win was really good for the program as it marked the first time Liberty had beaten ECU as well as the first time a CUSA opponent had gone down in defeat to the Flames. Significant? No doubt. But to me Monday night’s thrashing of the St. Francis Red Flash (or was it the Red Raiders? No I am sure it was Flash) was even more significant. First because it marked the 1st time Liberty had beaten them as well (they are exercising all the demons that our 1st division I team acquired back in my day) and secondly, with the short prep time, this team showed the capacity and aptitude to prepare for an opponent in a short turn around. That bodes well come tournament time. Thirdly, I was concerned with how this group would handle success after an emotional come from behind win. They proved to have their head on straight. Hopefully Coach Dunton and his staff can keep these guys headed in the right direction. Once again BJ Jenkins proved why he is a leading candidate for Freshman of the Year. He won the Freshman of the Week honors for last week’s games including a 16 point and 12 point performance of the Liberty bench. He is an excellent stand still shooter but more importantly his defense is stellar. He and J Holland continue to reek havoc on the opposing guards. Much better start than Saturday thanks in large part to the aggressive play of Anthony Smith. He missed his 1st shot but then hit 8 straight for 19 points. Again you can’t underestimate his contributions on D either as Devin Sweetney (Cousin of big Mike from Georgetown and the Chicago Bulls) went 6-11 and finished with 20 but he had 13 at half time and seemed unstoppable at times. Smitty guarded and made everything tough on him. Just a great all around game by Anthony. To me Damien Hubbard is playing the best of all the players on the team. He has been solid with the ball handling and continues to rebound like a 6-9 power forward instead of the 6-6 point guard that he is. 12 points 7 rebounds on 4-0 shooting. Alex McLean was not feeling well and was battling Flu-like symptoms all night. He left the court with the trainer to do Lord knows what but he gave everything he had for sure. What a bright spot for Liberty. The funny thing is he was not supposed to play that much but ended up being out there for 30 game minutes. He had a less than Ace-like 12 points and 4 rebounds but he got it done against a 6-10 inch J.R. Enright who came into the game averaging 14 points. Ace held him to 8. Rell Porter has al but disappeared even though he has not missed a game in his career and is still a starter. He played just 12 minutes the other night as he shared the power forward position with Redshirt Freshman Tyler Baker and even Damien Hubbard. Baker was less than stellar in 14 minutes of play but I believe the Andy Smallwood hype that Tyler Baker is gonna be Great! St. Francis may not be an opponent that anyone recognizes but they took 2 time Patriot league Champion Bucknell down to the wire before losing by 4. Liberty gets to return a visit to them on Dec 16th when they will have the much anticipated services of Dwight Brewington. His presence should make this team better but they are playing so well right now you almost don’t want to see him in there (ok lets not get carried away). Brew is the real deal and with all due respect to Karl Hess, Bailey Alston, Peter Aluma, Julius Nwoso and Brew’s teammate Larry Blair, Brew may be the best to ever put on a Liberty Uniform. Tough to crown him the king of Liberty basketball when no one has seen him play in a year but trust me, he is the truth. Yet another testament to the improvement of Liberty: I went this whole time without mentioning Larry Legend (with apologies to Larry Bird). LB is so spectacular at times that he gets taken for granted. However, his 9-12 performance for 21 points was not overlooked by the Red Flash. He simply abused their perimeter players all night. This Saturday Larry will surely pass Peter Aluma (1715) as the all-time leading scorer in division 1 history for Liberty. Larry has his eyes set on the Big South title held by Tony Dunkin of Coastal who is the only player in NCAA history to win 4 MVP trophies. If LB does pass Dunkin and the Flames continue to win, LB will become the 1st Liberty player to win the Big South Regular Season MVP. Gabe Martin was robbed twice and Dees once in the past few years. Aluma probably should have won one his junior or senior year as well. But what can you do right? Longwood this Saturday. Hopefully the student body will come out and support this team. I hear Jon Carone (AKA SupaJon) is coming to the game as his alter-ego. He is known for pulling some great pranks on the opposing team during football season (see the Facebook page of Kristen Hutchens if it still exists). I wonder what he has in store for the Lancers…..Shouts out to
