St Francis. Who? St. Francis. Of New York? No. Of PA? Yes. Are they the Red Raiders or the Red Flash? I don’t know. This conversation seemed to be prevalent in the Vines Center on Monday. Everyone was well aware of Conference USA’s lower tiered East Carolina Pirates. That win was really good for the program as it marked the first time Liberty had beaten ECU as well as the first time a CUSA opponent had gone down in defeat to the Flames. Significant? No doubt. But to me Monday night’s thrashing of the St. Francis Red Flash (or was it the Red Raiders? No I am sure it was Flash) was even more significant. First because it marked the 1st time Liberty had beaten them as well (they are exercising all the demons that our 1st division I team acquired back in my day) and secondly, with the short prep time, this team showed the capacity and aptitude to prepare for an opponent in a short turn around. That bodes well come tournament time. Thirdly, I was concerned with how this group would handle success after an emotional come from behind win. They proved to have their head on straight. Hopefully Coach Dunton and his staff can keep these guys headed in the right direction. Once again BJ Jenkins proved why he is a leading candidate for Freshman of the Year. He won the Freshman of the Week honors for last week’s games including a 16 point and 12 point performance of the Liberty bench. He is an excellent stand still shooter but more importantly his defense is stellar. He and J Holland continue to reek havoc on the opposing guards. Much better start than Saturday thanks in large part to the aggressive play of Anthony Smith. He missed his 1st shot but then hit 8 straight for 19 points. Again you can’t underestimate his contributions on D either as Devin Sweetney (Cousin of big Mike from Georgetown and the Chicago Bulls) went 6-11 and finished with 20 but he had 13 at half time and seemed unstoppable at times. Smitty guarded and made everything tough on him. Just a great all around game by Anthony. To me Damien Hubbard is playing the best of all the players on the team. He has been solid with the ball handling and continues to rebound like a 6-9 power forward instead of the 6-6 point guard that he is. 12 points 7 rebounds on 4-0 shooting. Alex McLean was not feeling well and was battling Flu-like symptoms all night. He left the court with the trainer to do Lord knows what but he gave everything he had for sure. What a bright spot for Liberty. The funny thing is he was not supposed to play that much but ended up being out there for 30 game minutes. He had a less than Ace-like 12 points and 4 rebounds but he got it done against a 6-10 inch J.R. Enright who came into the game averaging 14 points. Ace held him to 8. Rell Porter has al but disappeared even though he has not missed a game in his career and is still a starter. He played just 12 minutes the other night as he shared the power forward position with Redshirt Freshman Tyler Baker and even Damien Hubbard. Baker was less than stellar in 14 minutes of play but I believe the Andy Smallwood hype that Tyler Baker is gonna be Great! St. Francis may not be an opponent that anyone recognizes but they took 2 time Patriot league Champion Bucknell down to the wire before losing by 4. Liberty gets to return a visit to them on Dec 16th when they will have the much anticipated services of Dwight Brewington. His presence should make this team better but they are playing so well right now you almost don’t want to see him in there (ok lets not get carried away). Brew is the real deal and with all due respect to Karl Hess, Bailey Alston, Peter Aluma, Julius Nwoso and Brew’s teammate Larry Blair, Brew may be the best to ever put on a Liberty Uniform. Tough to crown him the king of Liberty basketball when no one has seen him play in a year but trust me, he is the truth. Yet another testament to the improvement of Liberty: I went this whole time without mentioning Larry Legend (with apologies to Larry Bird). LB is so spectacular at times that he gets taken for granted. However, his 9-12 performance for 21 points was not overlooked by the Red Flash. He simply abused their perimeter players all night. This Saturday Larry will surely pass Peter Aluma (1715) as the all-time leading scorer in division 1 history for Liberty. Larry has his eyes set on the Big South title held by Tony Dunkin of Coastal who is the only player in NCAA history to win 4 MVP trophies. If LB does pass Dunkin and the Flames continue to win, LB will become the 1st Liberty player to win the Big South Regular Season MVP. Gabe Martin was robbed twice and Dees once in the past few years. Aluma probably should have won one his junior or senior year as well. But what can you do right? Longwood this Saturday. Hopefully the student body will come out and support this team. I hear Jon Carone (AKA SupaJon) is coming to the game as his alter-ego. He is known for pulling some great pranks on the opposing team during football season (see the Facebook page of Kristen Hutchens if it still exists). I wonder what he has in store for the Lancers…..Shouts out to www.flamefans.com members for faithfully tuning in to our telecasts via the www.libertyflames.com website. Pamedic, Slyfox, Elicoolbreeze, Baldspot, Absturgill and many others deserve to be acknowledged.

Thanks for the love at the end. And SJ gets major mention.

I have to admit I cringe when I hear the superlatives about Brew right now. I want to see it on the floor first.

I know what you mean. How can anyone be as good as people say they are when that is all you hear every time you turn around. It isn't fair to Brew but that is why I only do it on a message board (note: no where near as much as Manger  ) and not on the air. Even though this board is more of a public forum than most I guess. Truthfully I have not hyped him that much but I have seen him play and he is the real deal.

oh I agree man....I am sure he is showing great things in practice or else so many people wouldn't be talking about him like they do....but he has yet to play a game here...so lets just wait and see....I do hope everybody is right though, if so this team could be very special

scar tends to be a tad conservative in his evaluation except his biase toward his own abilities in the glory days. brew is a true highmajor impact wing/pt.
there has been nothing like him in a lu jersey and coach says he is a great teammate very unselfish. time will tell.

lureal even criticizes Scar, wow. lureal has completely lost any sense of credibility that he still had in my book by doing that.

He may be bald, but he's the most knowledgeable person on this board in terms of basketball. I know that his head just got even bigger and balder by that sentence but it's the truth. Who else on here has coached Division I basketball? Who else on here has played Division I basketball? Yea, he jokes about his teams, but his basketball knowledge would flat out overshadow yours. It's one thing to be supportive, it's another thing to let that support completely blind you of any objectivity. Yes, I broke out a big word. Just get off the boards, please. We're all dumber having read what you have to say.

I know, personal attack, if he's allowed to do it then you better believe I am when he starts calling out our guys.

your real sensitive i was joking with scar. but i am not changing my stance on those who constantly try to spin negatives. hold others accountable and things will be back to a forum of sharing information, ideas and team support. but if some are going to only try an hurt coach d then i am not sit by and let perceptions be established by those who will twist facts for their agenda. but again i am a big scar fan and am guilty too of the older i get the better i was.

The question at hand isn't who has the most basketball knowledge.

It is how many hairs are indeed still growing on Scar's head?

You know, they tend to go easy on people the first crime they commit. The second one draws a little bit of a reaction. And the third just puts the icing on the cake.

SJ, thanks for sticking up for your boy SCAR 8). I think Lureal was just joking with me but it is cool either way if he wasn't. I don't have a big ego contrary to popular opinion so I don't mind the criticism if and when it comes. I do appreciate the love and support from our local super hero SJ. And of course no post from me is complete I guess without me exclaiming that I AM NOT BALD! I am gonna lose all of my hair messing with you guys  ....I do tend to be conservative with my evaluations because I know my words carry some weight due to my insight into Liberty basketball. Notice Sly, that it was SJ glossing my resume and not me btw :) I was hesitant to say anything about Brew until he plays in a game or two but I got carried away with making my blog interesting and forgot to censor myself. I will continue to let Manger and others hype Brew. No more for me thanks, I'm driving

Well how many people had Liberty winning 6 in a row so soon after last season's Larry Blair show which saw them suffer 23 losses in 30 games? Well I must say I thought they would win 4 or even 5 of 6 but all six? Not many people had that on their dance cards. The turnaround has been drastic and the improvement is noticable in several key areas. Having all 6 games in the Vines has helped and so has having 3 of the opponents be all non-division I teams. Having said that it was not that long ago that Shenendoah came in and forced an OT game before falling by 4 and us losing to 7th seeded Charleston Southern led that night by Kurtis "Minute" Rice and Terrell Brown which led me to ask the question on the air, what can Brown do for you? The answer was he can get you to the next round of the big south Tournament (those readers on www.flamefans.com can tell you that I don't capitalize big south conference in writing). Now to last nights game from SCARVISION. Out telecast got off to a peculiar start when my partner Ray Jones and I both got the giggles and it took us 5 or 6 takes to get our opening correct. We got it in as the opening prayer was taking place. Ray's last few words actually were spoken during the prayer. Oh well. The Flames didn't waste any time jumping on the Lancers from Longwood. In the past week Liberty has exercised many of my demons left over from the 1st days of division 1. Wins over St. Francis and East Carolina was something that our teams never experienced. Beating Longwood was no 1st for the program but it was enjoyable. Last year the 2 teams split with each team winning home games. We will make that trip again to Farmville in February and if we play like we did last night coach Mike Gillien's group is in a lot of trouble. The balance was evident as 6 Flames were in double figures including BJ Jenkins and Tyler Baker off the bench. The amazing thing is that BJ is only a freshman and has really played like a veteran. He is taking care of the ball, making tough shots, knocking down 3 pointers and playing lock down D. His near 10 point average is impressive when you consider he is playing less than 15 mintutes per game! Prorated scoring would have him averaging 40 points per game! Of course you can't do that but you get the idea. BJ's dad was listening to the game via www.libertyflames.com and took offense to something my partner and I said about BJ's new look. I think Ray said he would save a ton of money in hair care products. Not sure how that is offensive but his mom came down to half court and let us know we better not be picking on her baby LOL! Truth is Ray and I couldn't be more flattering and impressed with BJ's play. All in good fun. I learned my lesson years ago about what I say on the air. I was calling a South Lakes High school football game and said that a receiver had "more drops than Visine" and the kid heard it from his teammates and classmates the rest of his career. Since then I still use my sense of humor (what little I have) but I am more careful. Back to the Vines. The game was never in doubt as we highlighted Rell Porter to begin the game for Liberty and Maurice Sumpter for Longwood. Rell finished with a verry solid 10 points and 7 rebounds with 2-3 shooting from beyond the arc. Don't count Rell out yet now that the Dwight Brewington Era officially began when the clock hit :00 on Saturday night. Up until Last night Rell was blending into the woodwork so to speak but his presence was felt last night for sure. He will help Liberty win games but his roll and other's roll will be diminished. Brewington is gonna play. How did Sumpter do? Well he was harrassed into a 2 for 13 night even though he came into the game with a hefty 18 ppg scoring average. Liberty has done the job on the other team's big guns all season long. Justin Holland didn't hit a shot from the field (0-3) but he continues to shine off the Liberty bench as well with his harrassing on the ball D. Gotta give my man Russell Monroe some more props as he posterized 2 Longwood defenders who shall remain nameless. The place was so loud that Big Russ didn't know the whistle had blown and he lumbered down court to play D with that new found fierce look that flamefans.com's PAMedic has been asking for going on 3 years now! Larry Blair was solid but not great. He became the all time leadering scorer in Dvision 1 history passing the great center Peter Aluma last night. Surprisingly they didn't stop the game and have some sort of ceremony. It will be interesting to see how Larry and Brewington will gel together. Larry had David Dees for the 1st 2 years of his career but truth be told Larry Blair will achieve immortality in Liberty lore that he would not have approached had Dees not transferred to Louisiana Lafayette after thier sophomore season. The final score of 89-61 meant that we got to see a lot of players including the Jones boys (Dominique Jones and Armon Jones...No relation). Armon had 2 really nice catches and finishes and I think he will contribute more and more to Randy Dunton's team as the season goes on. The second move he was called for traveling but I didn't see it. Damien Hubbard continued to play solid but nothing spectaclar from him was needed. He provides whatever Liberty has needed as he has a real feel for his role and the role of others. He has proven himself to be a good leader so far. Brew will probably assume some of that leadership role as he will also assume the point guard position. The blowout also allowed our TV production to have a little fun as well including an extreme closeup of my dome on the big screen thanks in large part to the sign held by another flamefan.com member SuperJon. The sign asked if I used Fusion or Mach 3 to shave my head. The answer by the way is neither. I use clippers. Andy Smallwood, Nic Pierce, Jerod Brooks and Jon Carone (SuperJon) all got to see me with hair earlier when we drove to Lexington, VA to see VMI lose a hard fought, tight defensive struggle 105-103! VMI missed 24 free throws. That's gotta make East Carolina's John Fields feel a little better! Great night of TV and hoops from the Liberty Flames! See you from SCARVISION 1 month from now on January 9th when Radford comes to town. Thanks to a major mistake by the big south conference (for the second year in a row btw) the biggest rivalry game of the season will be played during Christmas Break! (Now you start to see why I type big south in small letters). Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from SCAR!

Thanks for the write-up, and the telecast. I know you're trying to let that "toilet-bowl" analogy of your partner's just go swirling down the drain, and flow off into the sea (actually, waste treatment plant)
of forgetfulness.

Great job.
