A friend of mine is referred to in this article.

What I find even more sickening than the actual actions, are the responses from administration. They've literally allowed tradition to trump everything, even the safety of their students. It's sad that this has happened, but I'm glad that it's being brought to light. This has been a long time coming.

I have a hard time taking anything seriously from a magazine that air brushed Al Gore's crotch and has had other articles debunked for lack of actual facts. Not saying this UVA thing isn't true, but I'd like a more trusted source for the details

The piece is actually very well written, Haize. El Scorcho tipped me off to this story the other day and it indeed is sickening. It is tough to eat lunch after reading even a few paragraphs.

I read it when it first came out. RS has good writing. It's just the veracity of it that I question at times. This seemed to have a lot of sensationalism in it that I've come to expect. Again, not denying it's a bad thing if true, just not swallowing it hook line and sinker.

I did not find much in this article surprising, and that's a depressingly sad statement on the state of affairs regarding sexual assault on many college/university campuses across the nation. The culture of borderline acceptance of sexual assault on colleges and universities across the nation is well beyond the point of sickening. It's virtually at the point on many campuses that victims are in far more danger emotionally and physically if they do the right thing and report it to try to get justice than they are if they just take it and bottle it up inside without telling anyone about it.

What makes this news even more disturbing is that UVa hired a person to investigate. That person was a former Phi Kappa Psi member, the same fraternity that got suspended over this article. UVa can not be more negligent, inept, lackadaisical, and careless.

No, I suggest that something more substantial would be appropriate as opposed to cancelling a few parties for the couple of weeks left in the calendar year. This is how UVa gives the appearance of doing something when in fact they really have done practically nothing.

THIS would be an appropriate response:
#1 Calling the state police to investigate the alleged crimes
#2 The president of the school not sending out an e-mail where the first words are about the "negative portrayal of the University."
#3 Not re-instating any fraternity until the investigations are completed

Aren't most people removed from their positions while investigations into crimes/misconducts are ongoing? We're not advocating for complete and total disbandment, just continuation of the suspensions...similar to way others get put on "paid administrative leave until the investigations are completed."

And UVA is a public school...so therefore the fraternities can be suspended until the investigations are complete.

Yep, suspending frats isn't going to stop people from raping.

BuryYourDuke wrote:Purple was right about this. There is a lot fishy here after reading the post article. It does nothing to change the overwhelming nature of the problem at UVA and other campuses, but it certainly takes some of the sensationalism out of this particular case. I hope it's not true, and not that she just misremembered things in some sort of post-traumatic haze.
