Playing in the NBA Top 100 Camp was something that James Johnson never imagined participating in. But after an impressive spring that changed.
“I never thought that I’d be here a couple of months backs,” the 6-foot-8, 220-pound power forward told Scout.com. “This is probably the pinnacle of all the events I’ve been too.”
But NBA Camp hasn’t been the only thing that has surprised Johnson, a 2010 prospect out of San Diego. His recruitment has taken off over the past few weeks
“Someone saw a good highlight of me and I got lucky like everybody else,” Johnson said.
“I’ve been getting calls from just about anyone you can think of really,” he said.. “I don’t know if they are just calling just to say ‘how it going’ because most of them don’t me and I don’t know much about them yet.”
Only four schools have seen him live -- San Diego, Marquette, California and Stanford. San Diego has offered him, as has Arizona, Virginia, Oklahoma and San Diego State.
Johnson, a future four-star prospect also mentioned Arizona State, Liberty, Oklahoma State, Texas, Alabama, Kansas and California.
“I’m getting the hang of what to say to coaches and what not to say to coaches,” Johnson said. “I have to catch my tongue sometimes. It’s too early for me because I don’t even know what position I’m going to be at the next level.”
Johnson said he wasn’t sure which AAU program he’d be with when July hits.
