Playing in the NBA Top 100 Camp was something that James Johnson never imagined participating in. But after an impressive spring that changed.
“I never thought that I’d be here a couple of months backs,” the 6-foot-8, 220-pound power forward told Scout.com. “This is probably the pinnacle of all the events I’ve been too.”

But NBA Camp hasn’t been the only thing that has surprised Johnson, a 2010 prospect out of San Diego. His recruitment has taken off over the past few weeks

“Someone saw a good highlight of me and I got lucky like everybody else,” Johnson said.

“I’ve been getting calls from just about anyone you can think of really,” he said.. “I don’t know if they are just calling just to say ‘how it going’ because most of them don’t me and I don’t know much about them yet.”

Only four schools have seen him live -- San Diego, Marquette, California and Stanford. San Diego has offered him, as has Arizona, Virginia, Oklahoma and San Diego State.

Johnson, a future four-star prospect also mentioned Arizona State, Liberty, Oklahoma State, Texas, Alabama, Kansas and California.

“I’m getting the hang of what to say to coaches and what not to say to coaches,” Johnson said. “I have to catch my tongue sometimes. It’s too early for me because I don’t even know what position I’m going to be at the next level.”

Johnson said he wasn’t sure which AAU program he’d be with when July hits.

It's weird that both LU and UVA are both after a guy in San Diego. UVA's staff is gonna need to establish some connections in this area of the country.

If this kid is genuinely interested in coming to LU, there will be a scholarship for him.

Johnsons home from Oklahoma trip. Ted Johnson, father of UA Class of 2010 targeted recruit James Johnson text messaged me Sunday night to inform us that his son indeed visited Oklahoma and Oklahoma State unofficially this weekend and it rivaled last week’s unofficial visits to UA and ASU.

The elder Johnson wrote: “We just finished two excellent visits to OU & OSU. Just like last weekend, two great programs with two great coaches, making James’ decision that much more challenging.”

The intense recruiting for Johnson, who could fill a need for the UA at the power forward position starting in 2010, will likely last a while despite the fact father and son want to limit their official visits to three.

Not much has been written about Virginia in the younger Johnson’s recruitment but the Cavaliers have a decent chance. He shares a good relationship with former Washington State coach Tony Bennett, who will be in his first season with the Cavaliers. Also, Johnson’s sister Joanna Johnson attends Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. They have family in the area as his uncle once played football for Liberty.

The elder Johnson told me recently that one of Johnson’s official visits could be to Virginia.

Johnson may not be as good as his 4/5 star HS hype, but I don't think he is nearly as bad as his college stats seem to indicate. He played for 2 very good programs with a lot of talent and got stuck near the back of the line for PT.
