Firing anyone is no "simple answer". At best, it creates at least one more question. And when considering people, there is no certainty of anything. LU's current situation bears that out.
Lifer, you must already know the University has a distinctive mission which it seems to have represented by all it's athletic teams. Simply put, your friend did not embody that - especially in recruiting. And when I say recruiting, I mean in both the methods and the people brought into the program. At that point, how much does winning matter in the debate?
Dale Layer is the antithesis of the Dunton-led program. The program has not seen the consistency of on-court result, but it has never (to my or public knowledge) compromised the mission of the University for the same of winning in the way your friend so overtly did. If I must choose between those two scenarios, I'll take #2 any and every time.
Obviously, there is a third option we've only seen rarely at LU In MBB: On-court success combined with support and enhancement of the University's mission. This is the Jeff Meyer model. (PH, I did it for you.) And this can be called such, Lifer, because anytime the program's support of the University's mission could be called into question during his illustrious tenure, your friend was squarely in the thick of it.
So if you have answers, let us hear them. Do not simply present steps which only lead to more questions. Or when you do, please answer the new questions as well. Otherwise, you (and your friend), are simply stirring the pot for - as you said - your own agenda.
