Shoot, all the best shopping (WalMart, Ross, TJMaxx) and best dining (Applebee's Ruby Tuesdays, Golden Corral) are in the city; do you really want to spend 20 minutes in your SUV's to get those kind of choices when you can just find a place to live close by?
It costs considerably less to live outside the city, and there is less crime.
Never had a crime committed against me or my kids in the city. Maybe I'm just that intimidating! Taxes are more, but when my business partner figured out his travel costs from Ivy Hill compared to my taxes, I came out on top by a fair margin- plus, if my house caught on fire, or someone in my family suffered a severe injury, I wouldn't have to wait very long for professional assistance.

It's the old "Green Acres" argument, country vs city is a personal preference. Each has it's advantages and disadvantages. I don't think any amount of arguing will persuade one side or the other.

Generally the lazier people will choose the city and hard working people will choose the country life. :)

Appreciate all the feedback. We live in a small town now. Less than 5000 people. It is only 5 minutes to the nearest grocery store and 10 minutes to Wal-Mart (the biggest store in town and it serves the entire county).

We do love the feel of where we live now, right on the edge of rural. I live in a subdivision built in the 1960 so we have neighbors for the kids to play with etc but just outside our subdivision is a ranch and lots of open spaces where people own many acres.

It will be a challenging decision for our family. Part of us lean toward the outskirts of the city just because being new to the area, it might be nice to be near some of the amenities, etc.

When I lived in the city I was much lazier. I believe it is a prerequisite.

Move to Farmville then if you want the same type of setting.

I only get to hear that once in a blue moon!
Heh, maybe it's not so much a nice place then. I don't know. I've never been there. I just looked at the pictures online. Maybe the pictures online are sort of like online dating. This looks nice in a picture, but in person it has an extra 400 lbs and a beard.

If you want the small town atmosphere of Farmville but a closer drive to LU, look into nearby Rustburg (south), Amherst (north), Altavista (south), Appomattox (east), or Bedford (west).

He forgot to say Concord. It's between Appomattox and Lynchburg. Plus it's cot a hardware store that doubles as a deli and butcher shop and the best fried chicken and hot dogs around. Yes, I weigh 300 lbs :D

It's nice if you like a small place and all the lack of stuff that naturally comes with a small place. Most young people don't like it. I tolerate it. I don't need a whole bunch of crap to keep me constantly entertained 24/7 like many do. As long as there is a Walmart and I have cable/satellite TV and internet then I can deal with it. If I feel the need for more, I just head back home to Lynchburg for a weekend if work doesn't interfere. Most people seem to prefer to go to Richmond area instead of Lynchburg, but Lynchburg is familiar, closer, and has my family and cats so it has a lot more going for me than the RIchmond area does.

What?
No one at LU knew I frequently hung out at the other LU 8) . Plus the church I attended in Farmville had a great, though small, group of young adults that I was able to feel comfortable with.

So it looks like we are moving in early June. Doing a roadtrip from California to Lynchburg the first week of June and moving into a place the second week of June. Right now, it appears we will be getting into the new apartments called 37 West near Waterlick and Timberlake.

Look forward to being out there! Once we are there, my wife will need to find work so if anyone knows a business that will be hiring this summer, let us know!

She has a photography business out here in California but it would take awhile to build any clients out there. On that note, she is looking for something photography related or office/bank type work. Prior to being home raising our children, she was the assistant manager of the beverage department at a casino, overseeing 70+ employees handling many administrative tasks such as inventories and payroll.

Yeah, we are looking forward to those apartments. It's still an apartment but, the way we look at it is, if you are going to pick an apartment, might as well pick something that looks nice. Hoping to buy in the next year or so.
