Also during the Convocation, Scott Hicks, dean of the School of Business, announced the school has received approval from its accrediting agency to move forward with its Master’s of Science in Information Systems and Doctorate of Business Administration programs.

“This is very exciting. This is a huge step for this university and a huge step for the school in becoming a full-service School of Business,” Hicks said.

This. A lot of people/companies consider an MBA from an non-AACSB institution to be worthless. I wouldn't even think of considering a doctorate from one. Liberty really needs this to be taken seriously in the business world.

This. It's a copy and paste post from the 90's till now.

I like to think the best Sly, but it really doesn't seem that LU is pursuing this as hard as you have been led to believe. First of all, AACSB is very keen on the research aspect of an institution, and LU leadership has continuously held that they will never be a research institution. Secondly, until Liberty starts making changes in the way Faculty are dealt with, they will have a hard time building their faculty and programs to a point that they will be able to make an effort at that type of recognition. Another point that might cause LU some problems is the overreach of Admin regarding the actual business program, and the limitations that have been presented in light of the ever-growing student population- i.e. student/faculty interactions and faculty contributions to the world of Business and Business Education. I did my grad work at an AACSB school and I remember trying to decide whether I should go that route or not; the faculty member that I had been consulting with laughed and said to just go with Phoenix or DeVry- it didn't make a difference because they just wanted teachers, and time spent writing or doing research wasn't the key to pushing through students. Hopefully Scott Hicks can institute some changes, but it will be a long time coming.

All that to say that even though I am teaching at another college, I still harbor some dreams about being at LU one day.

A standalone business school would help too. It must be state of the art with all the latest bells and whistles. IMHO it should have been second after the library.

In my experience, most businesses actually don't care about specific universities or accreditation. This is something that is more encouraged in academia but I have not seen its value in the real business world.

LU is pursuing the ACBSP for our business programs and not the AACSB. In the world of accreditations the AACSB is more prestigious, but as some have mentioned, it requires the programs it accredits to be research intensive.

Just from my experience - most of those the businesses that have this sort of requirement are large national and multi-national firms and corporations.

It really depends on what type of business you go into. Big national firms do care about accreditation. AACSB is by far the more prestigious accreditation. Just compare the member schools and see which one looks better. If it's true that Liberty is going for ACBSP instead of AACSB, it leads me to believe that they aren't totally serious about being a big time business school at this point.

You guys are talking a lot of vagueries, "big national firms", "multi-nationals", "corporations". All that means nothing, there are so many industries, segments, and levels. No matter the size, you'd have to be in the running for a pretty high-level executive position for HR to even consider looking at what specific type of accreditation your business school has, and even then they're not in acadamia.

I actually think you'd have a better chance getting vetted like that in a really small business.

Exactly- one can argue the point and say that to get a job you might not need it, but in regards to LU's reputation, adam is exactly right. Let's hope that this is the direction LU will be heading one day. Just remember- it wasn't that long ago our athletics were NAIA and NCCAA; now we are NCAA D1.

Yes it is vague, but it's the result of conversations I had over the course of 2 yrs. with several potential students when I worked at LU. Can I name the specific companies that required the Accreditation? No, not off the top of my head. But, it was not just for "high-level executive positions". There's not a whole lot that would go into having an HR department check on the accreditation status of the university where you graduated from. It's all available on the web...

No, because he didn't mention how crappy ECU's baseball stadium is compared to Liberty's new place.
