Based on some of your posts...lets just say we are in a grey area there. Not too many masculine guys talk about intimate conversation or readings. I mean ATrain does but....... :D

Did we offer this kid from Rockbridge County, Andrew Rousey ? He has committed to UNC-A. I saw him play Saturday. He could help us. One of best shooters I have seen in high school basketball.

The fact that CVA DOESN'T produce that much D1 talent makes that much more imperative we make a play for them and sign them. This goes for all sports btw.
I've always been a fan of moving someone up from D2 or NAIA because when they see our facilities they would appreciate it more and they would also have experience being creative in recruiting.
Here is what purple said about that situation about a month ago ballcoach ^^

He is better than anyone we have when it comes to shooting from outside. When he crosses halfcourt, he becomes a threat. He is better at creating shot off dribble than anyone I have seen in many years. When he rolls into Vines Center with UNC-A, I am afraid he's gonna lite it up.

Just because you were good in HS doesnt always mean youre going to tear it up in college. He may turn out to be pretty good...course he may turn out to be a total bust at the college level...all it takes is one or two bad injuries and that may totally change the outlook on how you do at the next level, or getting outworked by one or two other players in practice and you may never see the floor. College is a totally different animal over high school.

Your overall analysis is correct. However, in this case, this kid is a mini-Jimmer!

This kid would have been worth a gamble, he reminds me somewhat of JJ Reddick, though Reddick was bigger. Saturday he hit a couple 3s from 'parking lot" with 2 defenders all over him.

If someone thought this kid could not play at LU, our talent evaluation/scouting procedures may need tweaking.

I LOVE Duke. But this kid is a more complete player. IMO, he doesn't have the size to play 'Big Time' D1 but when you look at UNCA out of conference schedule, he will get a chance to prove himself against great competition.

He isnt better than Marshall -- Marshall percentage from 3 is staggering and his FT % is awesome, problem is he doesnt get enough shots or FT attempts...
He isnt as strong as JCS -- a better shooter off the dribble than JCS, but not better at getting to the rim and finishing...

Rowsey went 10-28 in that game in Roanoke -- not very efficient!

Rowsey is the first below 6 foot guard Eddie B has signed...Rowsey will struggle to defend, but he will be a threat no doubt.

For all you guys that want Central VA kids, who is good??? in college now?? Not many is my point.

YaYa Anderson @ Radford, from Fluvanna -- not a Liberty type kid,
Marshall Wood @ VT, Rustburg -- you may get him to transfer back, he is unhappy
Nick Gore @ VMI, Waynesboro -- role player, not a differnece maker

kids LU should have offered & maybe they did, IDK --
Darren White @ Dan River HS -- but signed with JMU so no big deal, then went to juco, should have been on him then.
Nick Barbour @ GW Danville -- High Point obviously was a great one

But in LU athletics defense -- central VA kids are partly dumb and have an thug mentality of themselves... most private school kids are transplants and dont want to stay in VA for college anyway. kids in Roanoke are overrated... besides Redick, whose been good??? Lynchburg public schools has never had a D-1 caliber player... very bad competition, you can drive 2 hours south or 3 north and find better players.

BSK- I've seen Rowsey play a bunch. I would take him over JCS in a heartbeat. As for Marshal, that depends on what you want. Marshall is a better defender but as for offense I'd take Rowsey again. He is a much better passer and has a very good Basketball IQ. His size kept him out of the bigger schools but he will do very well in the Big South

LCS has produced D1 caliber players, there are some playing on Tuesday. But you are right they may not be even a close fit. But would it kill the staff to burn some recruiting time to attend 2 or 3 games in the area? (They may do that and I just don't see them but it doesn't appear they do)
No one, who is at least sane, is saying stock your roster full of CVA recruits. But having 1 or 2 would go a long way to making you relevant in the eyes of the community.

PH-

Difference is JCS is a senior and Rowsey is a fresh... you going to tell JCS to leave?? you gotta take what you need that year PH... thats called roster building... LU needs athletes hopefully they go get one or 5!! got enough shooters.

Reasons why certain schools dont take players is NOT public info --- why didnt UNC or Duke take John Wall, when he grew up in Raleigh -- sometimes there is baggage that comes with kids and certain coaches dont want to deal with it!! figure it out fellas!!

Being seen as a recruiter in public is more important than actually signing players... kids in CVA dream of playin for VT, UVA, or VCU... Liberty isnt a dream school for them... take kids that want it!! not kids that settle for it!!

i am going to have to side with PH on the local kids...it does add to the goodwill with the community if you at least have some kids from places like Cave Spring or PH-Roanoke or EC Glass or Salem or Glenvar or Heritage or Rustburg and the list goes on and on. ou dont necessarily have to pack your roster with them per se. Look at the women's team, especially someone like Devon Brown. She is from Waynesboro and all her family and quite a few come from there to watch her play. Im sure if we got a couple local kids, that quite a few people not only from their class but from their other circles would come support them so it wouldnt hurt to at least give it a shot

Well BJ, its probably a good thing you and PH arent making any real decisions for the University...

sure take a walk-on from one of those schools you listed that wouldnt be a big deal, and make the FF Nation happier cause 12 cousins and sisters came to support the Basketball lacking attendance!!!

Im not (and Im sure PH isnt either) saying to take some joe blow walk-on kid. As has been astutely noted above, you dont get a ton of high level D-I talent out of this area, but you get some decent players that arent even getting a sniff from here. If you can get one or two of them to stay home and match it with a coach that is a good developer of talent, then youll not only reap the benefits on the court, but youll reap them in the community around the campus as well

You may or may not be correct in your assessment. The fact is you have never seen any of our current players against second rate HS competition, so it´s hard at best to compare. Will Rowsey´s talents translate to D1 competition? I guess we will find out up close and personally.

I´m not sure what Purple´s ¨street¨sources are, but before jumping to the conclusion that our coaches misevaluated him and dropped the ball by not going after him I would want to know a few things. Was there any contact with the young man at all? Maybe he let them know early on he wasn´t interested. Sometimes a kid just doesn´t want to be too close to home because he wants to move on into adulthood. It´s also possible that something raised a red flag that he might not be Liberty material. We don´t know.

I'm siding with BSK completely on this one, too. Something no one's mentioned: sometimes it's worse to have a local kid on the roster who gets little/no PT than to not have any at all.

To have no locals on the roster doesn't mean they "aren't getting a sniff."

I dont think there is "zero" talent in the area as you attest bballfan (and turn the volume down on your "mic" if you could), but you can understand why the coaches we have had tend to shy away from recruiting a lot of kids from Lynchburg, Roanoke, Danville, etc. All I will say is if a once in a generation talent happens to come from around here, would you rather he stay here or go somewhere else and you ask "what might have been"?

I don't think LU recruits the local kids very hard. I attend a lot of high school basketball games. I have NEVER seen a LU coach at any game.
I talked with a D1 coach from within the state at a Gretna game one time. He told me it was very important that they get a certain kid from the area because it would make their roster look good with in-state player.
Look at the rosters of Big South schools in many sports. a lot of good ones from Lynchburg/Central Va area get away. I think it's because LU does not recruit them, for whatever the reason.
Recruiting a local kid who ends up playing, pays dividends down th eroad in future recruiting. I personally know of players at other schools who would have went to LU had a formal offer been made. Heck one has started at a ACC school for 4 years, yet LU never made offer. Good kid, straight A student, (made ACC all academic team a time or 2). But he wan't good enouigh for LU.
