Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell, regarded as South Hampton Roads' top high school football recruit in the Class of 2013, was arrested early Sunday morning in Charlottesville, according to multiple published reports.
Mizzell, a senior running back at Bayside, was arrested during a visit to the University of Virginia campus. Mizzell committed to play at U.Va. in August after receiving scholarship offers from many of the country's top programs.
The Washington Post reported that the crime is a misdemeanor and that Mizzell had been released from custody.
Mizzell, 19, was among about 20 recruits who were on a visit to U.Va. He was arrested on 14th Street in the heart of U.Va.'s "Corner" district around 2:30 a.m. after being spotted in the middle of the street by a police officer.
Mizzell "was standing in the middle of the road and the car came up 14th Street and swerved to go around him," Charlottesville Police Lt. Ronnie Roberts told The Roanoke Times, "and that's when (Mizzell) attempted to kick the car.
"When the officer came forward, he noticed alcohol on (Mizzell's) breath and the investigation went further. At that point, it was determined that he was underage. The young man was very cooperative."
