I think they deserve it based on who's returning, but they are going to have to start playing defense if they expect to be #1 by the end of the season. They did just receive bad news yesterday that two of their more highly touted freshmen - Peter Jurkin (you can't make that up...) and Hanner Perea - are each suspended nine games for taking illegal benefits from an AAU coach/IU "booster".
Conversely, Louisville is the #2 and has their own issues, but they are the opposite of IU - defense is really good, offense is, ugly.
Who knows how good #3 Kentucky will be. The talent is there to be the best, but it takes more than talent to win it all. The other freshmen post player - Willie Cauley-Stein - has been a very pleasant surprise and Nerlens Noel's offensive post game has been developing quicker than expected.
