9/1 vs. Liberty

Outlook: The Flames will be one of the better FBS teams next year, but the Demon Deacons are in the ACC. Purely based on measurables (size, speed, strength), Wake Forest completely outmatches Liberty. Wake Forest will have no trouble with Liberty at home, but expect the Demon Deacons to come prepared because Turner Gill remains one of the better coaches around.

I was curious what the writer was referencing in terms of the "measurables" (size, speed, strength) so i did a little analysis comparing the 2012 roster for each team. I would love to find sources for speed and strength (let me know if you know of a good data set). Simply comparing rosters, what I found surprised me:

In general, the size of the Liberty & Wake Forest players are very close. In fact, less than 1"(.94 inches) separates players (based on average height). By position we give up the most height at the running back position. On average Liberty players actually weigh 1 and 1/3 pounds more per player. The median weight (220) and the mode (190) were equal for both teams.

One stat that stuck out was the median average years of experience in favor of Wake Forest 3 years to 2 for Liberty players (note I counted each year included the redshirt year as 1 year of experience).

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Figuring out where Wake Forest's program stands these days is a matter of perspective.

The Demon Deacons took a step forward last year after doubling their win total and claiming their first bowl berth since 2008. But for the third straight year, they still managed to lose more than they won.

While last year's 6-7 finish sure looks better than the 3-9 debacle of 2009, it's not good enough for those within the program.[/quote

Greensboro (NC) News & Record wrote:Wake Forest football: Price benefits from tough freshman year

Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe isn't worried about junior quarterback Tanner Price getting a big head.

Not after his 3,000-yard season last year, not even after Price became the poster player on the Demon Deacons' billboards around Winston-Salem.

All Price has to do if he senses things getting too good is think back a couple of years to when he was a freshman starter.

To Wake Forest football fans still recovering from the wild ride of 2011, coach Jim Grobe has a piece of advice.

Keep those seat belts buckled.

"It puts a lot of gray hairs on your head," Grobe said. "It's tough. But I hope that's the way we continue.

"I think it's really going to be cool for our fans, and people who like college football. There aren't a lot of definites, but there is a lot of potential."

Wake is returning a lot of talent our secondary will be top 20 in football our lbs top 30 and Nikita manning the middle this D is going to be reminiscent of 06.

Liberty lost their stud QB who gave state fits last year to graduation and over half it's starters. A new coach, new starters, new system against a good Wake team returning everyone minus some OL, Givens, and Pendergrass. It is going to be Route city. It will not be close in the 3rd the only way it is is if Grobe calls off the dogs up 30-3 and their starters play well against our backups.

I'm listening to the big south teleconference and Coach Gill just said Aldrekis is suspended for this game. He also said again that Abnar will play and not be redshirted. I love our depth at RB even without AA. I think Des Rice will hurt some folks this year.

He just said the QBs will play 2 series each at the start of the game and then the coaches will decide who will finish the game. He will name a "starter" by the end of the week , but they have both earned a chance to show what they can do in a game situation..

Wow, TG is not playing around. I think TG has already equaled the amount of suspensions DR had over his 5 years.

Guy asked him to break down the RBs and then asked how to pronounce AA's name. Gill said he was suspended and then went straight to the rest of the RBs. SCH to start, DR back-up / change of pace, and Davis (I think he mentioned him) and Abnar will see some time.

Hey guys, Wake Forest fan here.

I am also and editor on the website Blogger So Dear (an article was posted from there on this thread earlier).

I'd like to apologize for some of the factual inconsistencies within that article but it is really difficult to find a lot of good information out there about Liberty, especially since Turner Gill has taken over.

I listened to the first part of the Turner Gill press conference this morning, and just want to make sure that the QB debate is between Hudson and Woodrum correct?

Also, if there are any questions about Winston-Salem or Wake Forest I would be glad to answer them to the best of my ability. I hope a lot of y'all make the trip down and it is a great day weather-wise for football in NC!

Best of luck this weekend as well!

It is Hudson and Woodrum (not Woodram) for the QB spot with Javan Shashaty as our third but dont expect to see much of him if anything

Appreciate it. We were on Woodrum for a while before he committed to y'all. I don't think that we offered, but I know UVA and Vandy were on him too. Should be fun to watch.

Sad that Grant is redshirting this year (he probably would have done well to last year), but it will be good to see him get some time to learn before stepping up in 2013. With the ups and downs AA has been through, its unfortunate that he has gotten off to a start like that with the new coach. hope this is just a blip and he is back on track for the opener or at least for the rest of the non-conference slate
