"The late Rev. Jerry Falwell often talked about having an athletics program that competed at the highest level. The Liberty University Club Sports department is taking huge strides toward fulfilling that original vision for world class athletics at this institution."

So our fan base is like every other fan base in the country?

Thanks.

Pretty much. The only club sport that gets talked about at length is hockey (wrestling initially but I aint going into that can of worms again).

Speaking of that, since Im the writer for club sports, I will effort having something about the games posted Saturday night to the club sports page and a little recap up on here as well.

My interpretation is that when Dr. Falwell made that statement, club sports were the furthest thing from his mind. Were I working in club sports, and I could rally support and financing behind such a cry, why not? But it dilutes the intent of the original idea.

It's difficult for me to fathom the degree of importance placed upon club sports at Liberty. There are those who would wish them be placed within the same context of LU's NCAA Division I sports, but that seems wholly disingenuous, and fails to consider the most basic of differences that make those sports such an incredibly higher level of competition than that of club sports.

Club sports absolutely have their place; those involved simply fail to recognize it most of the time. And at Liberty, it would seem they are encouraged to do so.

ummm club sports aren't competing at the highest level. They are not fulfilling anything.

I like that we have successful teams in the club level and I loved going to hockey games back in the day but at the end of the day its not the highest level and their success, though awesome, should not be credited for fulfilling Dr Falwell's vision.

That is just silly to me.

Well if they didnt think club sports mattered all that much (not on the same level of the NCAA sports I will agree), I wouldnt have a job right now. They wanted to get a little more exposure for those sports and sure enough, Im the one tasked with making sure that happens.

As for the first part of the article, if you dont like what I said, it got approved by my editor and by JLFJR (and a number of other people down the line) so though you see it as silly postie, those people (who's opinions I take a lot more seriously) didn't see it that way.

Well the article got green lighted by my editor and JLFJR (or even the gy over my department) didnt say "this is silly, club sports is nowhere near the level of our NCAA sports, we dont need to write an article about it..." (or something to that effect). If you got a problem with what I said, im sure you can blow up quite a few inboxes about it...course thatd be just as silly Im sure.

You didn't say it, only repeated it. I don't believe anyone on here is disparaging you. You did your job, and that's comendable. Don't take any of this too seriously. You are not what you do.

Beej, compare it to doing radio for a youth baseball league. It's a bit silly in reality. Does that make you silly? Well maybe. But in all honesty, what you cover makes no difference as long as you're getting paid and gaining experience.

There's value to reporting club sports that creates another facet of student satisfaction at the school, but that value is relevant to the players, friends and families of the players involved. It's not relevant to the average sports fan nor Dr. Falwell's vision of succeeding at the highest level of athletics.

Do they have a reporter for intramural sports? I'm assuming not. IMO there are a lot of things IMS could do to really enhance their setup.

I knew that "well maybe" would ruin the whole point of the post.

There are a few club sports that exist because there is no NCAA equivalent. Paintball and disc golf are two that I think of right off, but I'm sure there are more. The success of those sports shouldn't be diminished because they're not scholarship sports.

I'd venture to say we pump more money into club sports than most schools.

The reasoning for funding could be akin to the idea that because Liberty limits traditional collegiate recreation (alcohol, etc.), other forms of recreation must be provide and encouraged to fill in the gap. Then, once that level of funding has been given, let's promote the positive return on that investment. Could also increase applications.

I don't like this. While it makes the club sports more elevated, I almost feel that it cheapens the Varsity sports. Club sports are very important and deserve a great website, but I think it should be different than the Varsity website.
