the problem is for every guy who actually does his work, there is one or two nitwits who don't. these methods are then deployed to try and solve the issues. the only problem is all the good people leave because even when you "explain " to them whats going on, its so grating on the good employees that they get out of there.
here at work because of similar issues, the base+commission sales guys were having to clock in and out every day. certainly not "log every item worked on" but when you are traveling 10% of the time it can get cumbersome. i just never did it when i was the only sales guy beyond my boss who also spent 90% of his time selling. but once we started bringing in other sales guys, my boss the owner and i had a meeting and i agreed ot start just for the sake of congruity within the department while still voicing my displeasure with having my time nickle and dimed when my pay should be based off my sales numbers, not hours. (i have a base but i have to earn it in commissionable sales)
well we finally have a pretty good crew of sales guys and while i say nothing, they all grumble about it constantly. my boss knows this and its finally being abolished this fall. the key words being "finally" and "good"...over the past 6 years we brought in alot of dopes who couldn't sell a bandaid to a kid who just scraped his knee, they couldn't cold call, and could not close. (many peopel can only sell themselves...not other products...and i find that nearly 90% of sales people can't generate their own leads). These guys needed constant supervision. they are the sole reason HR feels it has to do these things...
