My thoughts exactly.
It's easy for us as fans to pick schools that could work for the WAC eastern division, but the bottom line is that conference presidents make the final decision concerning that matter.
If the WAC dies as a football conference, it's because the remaining football members could not convince the basketball members of the WAC east plan. But you know what? It's hard to convince people if your eyes are wandering. I believe that when the Big Sky schools said no, the WAC curled up in the fetal position.
The WAC has prided themselves to remain a western conference. I understand their logic. However, if the Big East (a soon to be non-major FBS football conference) can come up with a plan to save their conference, I have to respect them. After all, it's not like the Big East has had 50 years of experience like the WAC.
I do not know what went on behind the scenes. Maybe one of the Big 4 (Liberty, Jacksonville St, App St, Ga Southern) got cold feet. Maybe the money did not add up. Maybe Idaho and New Mexico St. could not see themselves traveling to the east coast. Maybe the WAC could not get a waiver from the NCAA. Maybe the WAC continues to operate like "a day late, a dollar short" organization. I don't know. The saddest part with the WAC is that none of the remaining WAC members will get a dime from departing members if the conference decides to fold.
