i don't think they get how very unlikely it is to find a potential superstar that is undrafted. who is the best undrafted player you can think of...like EVER....none of them have put up this stretch of games, especially in the ny market.

brad miller? john starks? ben wallace? when jon starks was a 6th man phenom in 91 in NY he got a TON of press. as much press as you could get back then. the knicks were inconsistant with 1 star and john starks gave them another guy they could rely on to allow them to consistantly win 50 games a year which i think they did pretty much for 4 maybe 5 years straight.
Bruce Bowen went undrafted as did Haslem. Apparently so did Jose Calderon and Jose Juan Barea. Must be a Jose thing with them two.

yeah, exactly. Of course being the first asian american to do well in the nba adds to the story but any other race with the same scenario would be getting the same exact kind of attention
The first? Ever heard of Yao Ming?

Jerry West was the best European-American to ever play the game though.

He and Lin are one in the same racially/ethnically for the US Census Bureau. You know, like how guys like Luol Deng and Ben Gordon are referred to as "African American" despite neither one being US residents.

And Los Angeles is in Asia? Calling Jerry West European American is the same thing as calling Jeremy Lin Asian American. West wasn't born in Europe (Cehlyan, WW), and Lin wasn't born in Asia (Los Angeles, CA). This is why the insert continent American designation is retarded since it can't apply to white people.

I wouldn't go around publicly saying a white american is a european american. I somehow got accused of being racist for it one time. Apparently I am not even allowed to infer my ancestors originated from Europe...

But Michael Jordan was born in New York, and he's African-American. So isn't Jerry West European-American?

Please. Let's embrace Lin's success based on his talent, not his race. Carry on...

P.S: the media won't admit to it, but that's the only reason they care.

Im not sure either...Jeremy Lin's parents came to the US from Taiwan when he was born, so him being referred to as Asian-American makes much more sense than Jerry West

to be honest, the only places that really seem to be talking about his race is the internet. at least from the coverage i hear. the fact he's kind of asian looking is somewhat important being as asian success in the NBA is very few and far between.

but that has no merit on his performance to date since taking over the point for the knicks.

I feel like the media has done a nice job of showing his amazing success and how unusual it is that he's an asian NBA player.

Calling West European American is the same as calling Lin Asian American. West was born and reared in USA, he's an American. Lin was born and reared in the USA, he's an American. Neither one is European, Asian, African, Australian, Canadian, nor any other country or continent. If you disagree with calling West european american because he isn't from europe (which I assume you do based on your comment), then by that logic, one shouldn't call Lin an asian american.

As far as my disagreement with the African/Asian/Continent American designations. Would you call a white guy that migrated from South Africa an African American? The majority of people would call him white or Caucasian because he doens't have the "right" skin color to fit the term. Would you call a black guy that migrated from Korea an Asian American? The majority of people would call him black or african american because he doesn't have the "right" skin color to fit the term.

+1. Jordan is "less" African than white high school classmate I had for two years who was born and lived in South Africa for 14 years before migrating to the US.

wow I regret even saying asian american...If I knew all the crap would be spewed following that statement I wouldn't of said.

Bottom line is the Lin story is a great underdog story. He finally has made it after being overlooked by colleges and by the nba. Its a good story. Stop allowing ESPN to ruin your lives. Its easy. Don't read/watch espn aside from sporting events. Its what I do and enjoy sports a lot more because of it

1 Yao Ming is not an American. At least wasn't while playing not ure his status now
2 Bruce Bowen et al did not walk on at an Ivy League school at have this stretch of impact.
3 talk about sensitive can't believe the ESPN guy got booted for his comment. I didn't even think about it until there was the whole brouhaha. Apparently I'm not racially sensitive

I think you may not quite understand. I was just lampooning the fact that everyone these days is so quick to hyphenate races and nationalities. I just long for the day we all can unify. We may be from all different places on earth, but we share one common unifying characteristic... we're Americans.

I long for a day where it doesn't matter too, but to ignore theses differences also does a disservice to all in my opinion. Its typically white people uncomfortable with racial differences that say this anyways
