I'd rather it not be at a campus facility. I'm just trying to think of a facility that is nice and not too humongous to host it.

- Roanoke Civic Center: a dump
- Richmond Coliseum: slightly less of a dump, but the CAA has that claimed
- Myrtle Beach Convention Center: They put a bid in the last time the CAA tourney was up for grabs, but lost. I don't know much about the facilities, but I wouldn't be surprised for them to be in the mix.

I think RBC Center, Greensboro, Time Warner, or Lawrence Joel would be cool. They are all kind of big, but would be more in the "middle" of everyone.

I like it at a campus site. At this level I think it is better.

Why? Here's what I'm afraid of... lets say Asheville wins the bid to host the championship. Now lets Asheville has a bad year next year and they get the #8 seed in the tournament. As Chris noted, the "opening" round will be at campus sites of the higher seeds, while the other 3 rounds will be at one site. So lets say Asheville loses to the #9 seed, do you really want the quarters, semis, and finals at a school where the "host" team isn't even participating?

It's also strange to be "on campus" when there are 8 fans bases interacting that have nothing to do with the school hosting.

I think it needs to be at a 8,000-10,000 seat arena, somewhere "neutral". Something in the "Tobacco Road" area would be awesome, like LJV Coliseum. 10 of the 12 schools would be within 3 hours of the tournament site.

And the roanoke civic center is way too big to begin with, salem civic center not much further away and is a better fit as far as capacity goes.

Somewhere in NC would be best for centrality, doubt it will make much difference for the title game if a non NC team is in the title game though based on yearly attendance figures

Don't they usually have ODAC and VHSL stuff in Salem though? It may be hard to fit in.

Do remember however that Salem hosts numerous NCAA events at the D3 level, including the ODAC so their availability would be limited.

and what RVA parks said.

Appears the Lawrence Joel would be available. I believe that the tournament would have to be run against the ACC men's tournament, though (This year's MEAC tournament is March 5th to 10th--I don't see Wake Forest automatically giving up the potential for 2 home games the last week of the regular seaosn.) Supposedly had 40,000 in attendance during last year's session.

Too big, IMO, and if the schedule forces you to go against the ACC, that's a big mistake, but Winston-Salem may decide to place a bid.

I love the idea of putting it at a neutral site. I'd love to take off work and attend the whole week. I love basketball. I love basketball tournaments that mean something.

A lot of love in this post

I'm with you manson. I have fond memories of attending BSC tournaments in Charleston, Ashville, and even our very first one in Anderson, SC which was in fact a neutral site.

Yeah I go to the CAA tourney every year and I don't even have a dog in the fight. Just enjoy watching good basketball and the tournament.

Yea I didn't even think about the fact of intervening with Wake's season b/c BSC tourney is a week before the ACC. I'm guessing this would hurt the BSC television-wise also. It looks like the ACC tourney is set for Greensboro from 2013-15.

I just can't think of a "nice" place, in a convenient location that would fit. The research triangle stadiums are too large and have ties to other events.

I have a very strong suspicion that Myrtle Beach will put in a bid, since they did for the CAA about 4 or 5 years ago. I've never seen the venue, but I found this video of some HS tourney highlights played their:

I'd be interested in knowing what the conference is looking for financially in the bids (what's the number and package that would interest them?) Has the conference overvalued what they think they're worth? Are they more concerned more with a good location?

It will also be interesting to see what inflated numbers are used by all parties.

From a geographical/logistical standpoint, the Charlotte area would seem to be ideal. I personally would not have a problem if it were at the Winthrop coloseum, even though it is obviously not a neutral site. We know from experience that the home court guarantees nothing in this format. A similar venue in that area which is neutral would be better. What is UNCC's facility like?

I don't think you can consider facilities from most non-BSC schools, like Charlotte. Charlotte would still have A-10 regular season play going on the week that BSC tourney would be.

March in Myrtle Beach or Charleston wouldn't be bad :D

North Charleston is a pretty nice area. I still have fond memories of being there for the 1994 tournament win.

I love Charleston, and although it's really too big, they could have it at the North Charleston coloseum like they did in 93 and 94. It's just not nearly as convenient as Charlotte would be. In Charlotte, the longest trips (Radford, VMI, LU, and ultimately Longwood) are only about 4 hours, and of course most of the Carolina schools are much closer. Charleston is more like 8 hours for The Virginia schools, and only CCU and CSU are really close.

Well, in 94 the area around the Coliseum seemed pretty nice.

Right now the BS has the worst tourney format of any conference in NCAA. Basketball needs to get away from the highest seed deal, and have tourney in a good arena in a good location. There are plenty available, they just need to make a phone call.

Pray tell list them. Also look at attendance numbers at years when hosted at highest seed or at a neutral site.

If you play in Charlotte, it would have to be at the old Coliseum out on Independence. The Bobcats already sacrifice too many home slots for the CIAA tourney every year at T-W Arena.

If you really want to throw a nostalgic spin on the tourney, playing it at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus in Raleigh would be neat.

I know the MEAC is using Joel Coliseum in W-S for their tourney this year, is that a permanent arrangement?

Are we so sure that KK and the Big South brass would play the tourney in SC at all with the whole Confederate flag boycott garbage that causes the NCAA not to play early round games in Greenville or Columbia at all?

MEAC is moving to Norfolk next year

The Big South would have to move their tournament from its current spot in the schedule if it wants to use the arena of a team like Charlotte or Wake Forest. As noted, those teams are still playing regular-season games. The MEAC plays its tournament the same week that the big boys do, not the week before like the Big South.
