I liked that he got us to the NCAA Tournament. that said, I do think that Coach Layer, despite how this year has gone, ought to get at least one more year. If our record was where its at with John Brown and Sommy Ogukwe healthy and with Evan Gordon still on the team, then yeah I could see why youd want to get rid of Coach Layer and all that...but no one planned for those things to happen. I dont think Coach Layer was sitting in his office thinking, "gee, maybe I should have my second leading scorer from last year blow his knee out in practice and jeopardize his future career...and then have one of the few legitimate post players I have on the roster blow HIS knee out soon thereafter, leaving me with only two returning post players with significant experience and a couple underclassmen who have zero game experience...oh and then...have the guy who was my leading scorer last year, even though he had a bit of an attitude problem the last part of the season...transfer to another school...yeah...that's the ticket". Would we have done better the last 4 years with RD? We can speculate but dont know the answer with 100% certainty. Would Jesse Sanders have come here? Probably not (and he will as I may have said elsewhere go down as the best point guard in LU history)...but we dont know for sure.
Who would you want to coach us TBGBG even if we do fire coach Layer?
1. Would I want to Coach? Absolutely.
2. Should we fire Dale? Absolutely not.
3. BJ, you are correct in that it wasn't planned, but don't make excuses. Find a way to get it done. VMI, COASTAL, UNCA, NO ONE is going to feel bad for you because of that. Get ready anyway. It sucks not having John Brown, but those other kids would have needed to give us SOME minutes of productivity anyway, and they haven't.
4. Evan leaving was not planned, but it was better for us. However, it also was not a huge surprise sprung on us in August. We knew that going into Summer. We knew with enough time to plan for that.
5. Would Jesse have come here? He's from Texas. Rell Porter was from Texas, Anthony Smith was from Texas, and Randy Dunton had been recruiting Jesse Sanders all the way in Texas.
