LOL SLy. You have been around long enough to know that type of statement isn't as cut and dried around here!

My first gut reaction is that unless LU goes it alone the Civic Center is MMMMAAANNYYY years down the road. The city has a high school that is crumbling and all hell would break lose if that wasn't addressed first. I could see dusting off the Schilling Center for a year to host Bb and VB and TRBC being utilized for Convo. Then the new Vines being used dual purpose again.

the civic center will never happen . Honestly if I was a resident of Lynchburg I probably wouldn't support my tax dollars to go towards it either.

Liberty has plenty of venues to fix the convo problem. Dual sites is not a bad idea.

One of your schools is crumbling, city workers are not getting raises, positions are being cut, GLTC is a mess, taxes are already pushing people out to the county. You may be on to something.

Yep. Already read the article. Wasn't impressed by the numbers then even less so now. There is a razor thin margin of error in breaking even. The tax revenue it would bring in pales in comparison to the cost. I would love to see LU build something to replace the current Vines center.

You're gonna have to pop a pill bud. Rest well tonight knowing the state is cutting down on repaving roads they did last fall and now we're in the biggest surplus of the commonwealth's history :D

And some Lynchburgians want to hate on LU. At least we have our house in order.

But I wouldn't be apposed to LU just building it as some what of a gift to the city. (not give it to them just provided it as a space for concerts and shows and what not) We could use some improvement with our image for some in the city. It is about witness at some point, even if they are stupid sometimes.

Oh and as far as GLTC is concerned...we can only carry them but so far :D I think the next agreement needs to have some language in it that allows the name LUTC to be used city wide when we hit the 9 to 1 liberty ridership compared to the city threshold

Sounds like most of the US. Taxes aren't really pushing people into the county... but that would be for a different thread. Too bad the city demo'd a school last year that wasn't crumbling because they thought the halls were too narrow. If the city wants a civic center bad enough, they will have it and I doubt that there would be too much fuss, since it would be understood that it would do no more than break even and provide additional tax income from entertainment. I just don't see how such a facility really benefits the city, and if it did, I would think that city leaders would have been courting LU. Doesn't really seem to be ideal any way you look at it; a lot to invest for convo.

Wish it work that way sometimes. I live on a well traveled road with some pretty nice properties and we haven't seen fresh asphalt in 10 years.

I really love the idea of a small venue like what the proposal is for the space where Tilley is now. I have always thought our volleyball and women's hoops teams should play in a smaller venue to promote a better home court advantage. As far as the Vines expansion, I personally love it, but I just do not like the civic center idea, so if the vines expansion occurs that small venue will have to be built and then TRBC would need to be used for convo.

Um....have you been sitting in TRBC on Wednesday mornings? It's no where near full. They don't even open the balcony. There are entire rows around me with no one in them.

Actually, I only show up when the chancellor announces bonuses for the staff. :D (I am not on staff).

I was thinking as I was getting soaked running through the rain from Schilling to DeMoss the other day, that this may be my life when the new Library gets built. It reminded me of watching the students cut through the Science area & SLAB to get to Convo on rainy days, and thinking there'd be no turning back.

Then it struck me that Liberty has a ONCE IN A LIFETIME chance to build underground tunnels between buildings that won't be seen above ground, but would be absolute heaven to have when it rains (no, not in Drenchburg) or during those freezing winter days. It shouldn't cost that much more to build since you're building from ground up, and there won't be another chance to do it, like, ever. The only way to retrofit after building are those awful hamster trails they build in Minneapolis between buildings that are so unsightly.

So, what do you say, Jerry--can we count on having tunnels from DeMoss to the new JLF Library and the other buildings next to the Library? :D
