Dang, that really makes me wish I had been there. It looks like LU is really getting the program in shape. Great crowd, did they ever release an official number?

Some say less. I dunno. It was the most people I'd ever seen at The Bill. That's good enough for me.

Athletics Department Offers Thanks For Record-Setting Homecoming Weekend

Image
October 18, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.
The Liberty University Athletics Department would like to thank all those that made Homecoming 2006 one of the most special moments in Athletics Department history.

The football game saw a record-setting crowd of 15,631 fans attend the contest between in-state opponent William & Mary and the Flames, surpassing the previous school and Big South Conference record by almost 3,000 fans.

Those that have made Liberty Football and the overall University move from just a dream to a reality were celebrated during the afternoon. A jersey was retired in honor of Founder and Chancellor Dr. Jerry Falwell and a special presentation was made to Art and Angela Williams to honor their financial backing to the school.

Be sure the click here to see a pictorial remembrance of the entire special day.

I was actually into the football game more than usual- though I only stayed through abt.1/2 b/c
my daughter had to sleep. (I love watching hockey b/c it moves fast). At risk of ruining anonymity, I'll share a funny incident- children are full of them. My children were rolling down the hill; the boy-almost a decade older- decides to go take pics. and tells the 3 yr. old to go see Mom-like she's going to do THAT, esp. in her tired state. She decided to go to the bouncy houses her brother had mentioned but headed TOWARD the field!! Meanwhile, I had started down the hill as soon as the brother left into the bleachers. As I got closer, I called to her. She continued onto the sidelines, so my voice escalated. She insisted on cont., saying she wanted to go to the bouncy house (eyes fixed on the watcha-ma-callit the players come out of at the start). As she crossed the sideline onto actual field, my voice was very firm and I closed the distance. Thank God the play was at the other end!

That's a great story! Priceless. I mean, that tunnel certainly looks like a bouncy house to me.

Forget the pass.

Can she kick extra-points and/or field-goals?

Barber makes sure everyone is counted coming into the stadium. They don't guestimate that stuff anymore. I can remember when Paul Nazigian, Mike Montoro and me would come up with a best guess number back when we used to have big crowds in the mid to late 90's. Naz and I were on staff and Mike Money was the SID. We had some good crowds for sure back then but Aluma put a lot of folks in those seats.

SCAR, are you do for your check up soon? They STILL guestimate attendance!!! They have no way of counting the people who come into games. Plus, not only do I have a hard time with attendance figures, but if they end in an odd number (like 99% do) then I KNOW they are wrong!! :D

They make everyone walk through the turnstile now. I know at the main entrance that's the case.

Two entrances, turnstiles at both. Seems pretty easy to me.

SCAR is right and haize is wrong here. from the outset, barber has said the attendance would be kept correctly, so i take him for his word.

While i agree and take barbers word as well, is there any way to calculate how many fans leave and then come back thru the turnstiles. I know some people are getting double counted.

if they go to scanning tickets ie. with a bar code, and have students scan their liberty one card as they come through, it would be very accurate. im sure you would have a student be stupid and scan it twice, but maybe there would be a way to only accept the scan once.

I'm very much against the scanning of student IDs.

why? other schools have some type of scanning device in counting their students as they enter as stadium/arena.

Probably because he still uses his ID to get into games.

They have had turnstyles there for a few years now. That in NO WAY guarantees accuracy. "Security" is a seive at the football stadium (not to mention the Vines) and people can come and go at will. I am MORE than positive that Barber says and BELIEVES the total's are accurate. Whether they are or not..............I am gonna say nope. When I can sneak into a game uncounted then you KNOW they have some ways to go!!! But in all honesty the attendance number is either a fluff number OR a number to establish our D1A (Or whatever the crap they call it now) Credibility. NOW nowing we want to "go to the next level" and that requires an attendance minimum, then, based on LU's history, do you think it is MORE or LESS likely we have "accurate" numbers?

Well you know we could sit here and talk about what to do about the numbers and security or what not...OR we could actually come up with some valid solutions and submit them to these folks. Barber seems to me like the kind of guy who would be very receptive to well thought out input from fans and constituents
