you cant put that on the rest of the team. I'd rather go with what we have at this point than tarnish your reputation to strengthen our D line.

WHY DID YOU NOT STOP THIS?????

Certainly other players must have known about this. Shame on them for not talking to Asa and trying to atop him.

Just awful.

Good one Asa. Hope it was worth it!!!
Because he isn't the only one? We have a lot of 2nd chance folks. Maybe we are becoming like the Raiders?

That's a really good point Haize.

I know we're all upset, but more important keep this guy in your prayers. I hope this is a wakeup call for him. Football means nothing when we're talking about a man who needs our prayers and support.

Wasn't Liberty Asa's second chance. Didn't some other 1a schools pass on him for something like this. I really thought he would run with a second chance. If its true let him go and the rest of the team needs to buck up and play harder.

I'm still glad we give folks second chances. I thought he was such a good kid and making good strides, and now this. Now we need to pray for him, but i'm afraid his LU career is over.

That is exactly why i love this school. If this happened at another university most people would be furious with the player. I know all of us are disappointed and it sucks that this happened but the choice Asa has made may affect more than just our game against NC State.

And i also hope our team can rebound from this and it is only a one player deal.

Also the goal is still the same come 9/3/11 BEAT STATE.

It was his third or fourth chance. WVU and UVA passed on him because of grades. Then, even with legal trouble coming out of prep school, we still stuck by him. It kills me that he threw all of it away. I absolutely hate that for him.

People do dumb things and Asa Chapman did a very dumb thing. He should probably be dismissed from the team and from Liberty but that doesn't mean his friends, teammates, coaches, and fans give up on him as a person. His time as a player is probably done but as a 23-24 year old he has a long life ahead of him. This doesn't have to be the end of the road for him.

It certainly better be the end of the road for him if he has illegal controlled substances in his car! That's what caused all the trouble in the first place!

I like to think I have fairly good perception and can read people pretty well. Nothing about Asa came across to me as fake...all of his talks to the team about conducting themselves in a certain way on and off the field really seemed from the heart. I just have to wonder if this was a wrong place at the wrong time and wrong people or if this was a long time in the making, because I never would have imagined he was capable of something this serious.

Seriously guys, keep Asa in your prayers...as mad as we are on a message board he is sitting in jail with the Devil convincing him that his life is over. These are the darkest day's of his life. There is no doubt he'll get the punishment he deserves, as he should...but this is serious, and it really makes you wonder what the underbelly of all of this is.

Edit: Come on Bury, that's an awful lot to ask for a coaching staff to know. Things at this magnitude are so intense even some of his closest friends might not know...people find out about these things when someone's life gets out of control and they get reckless/careless. Asa has not even remotely seemed "out of control" so I imagine he had a pretty tight lip on all of this. AND bare in mind we dont know the facts yet...for all we know he was driving a car with people who had it...he's 100% wrong...but let's not try to not jump to quick conclusions....thats why we have a justice system.

As much as I want this to be the case I highly, highly doubt that it is. When is the last time the details of a Liberty athlete's arrest been made public. To this day most people don't have a clue even half of the athletes that have gotten in trouble. This would not be as public as it is if the charges weren't legit.

Also, as much as I want to believe the "other people in the car" reasoning, that's just not likely the case. I wanted to believe that so much that I asked Medic about it. There's a completely separate charge for being in the car with the substance and no proof of ownership shaving the substance on you or you being in the car alone when stopped. The fact that it's a felony possession charge means that it's very likely he had it on himself or was the only person in the car. They don't throw around felony charges for without very good evidence to back it up.

I agree completely with you on keeping him in your prayers and that stuff but just can't buy the "wait until the justice system plays out" line of thinking on this one and that's unfortunate.

I agree. I'm only saying I'm not willing to paint the picture that he's an "out of control dealer" or something which seems some are wanting to label him with.

Rocco's Presser made me pump the brakes a little bit...his comments almost led me to believe once more facts are released different opinions will be made. Maybe I read to much into what he was saying but it seemed to be a different statement than it would have been for a guy who messed up, we know he messed up, he knows he messed up and now he has to deal with the punishment. I cant come up with a good reason for Rocco to say that either seeing what year he is and the likelihood of a redemption story is very unlikely.

*Oh, and for the record my justice system line was in regards to our conclusions...not him playing again. IMO we've seen the last of him...or at least should have.

+1

The coaches and the athletic department have made good progress building LU's reputation as having well disciplined and well mannered teams. I hope we aren't still in the habit of trying to remediate players who have made poor decision making a habit, a la Eric Green.

Rocco:

“I’m certainly very hopeful as we go through the due process here and as we wait on the court date that we will be in a position to strongly reconsider reinstatement. But it will not be until we have sufficient information that, in our opinion, would merit that response.”

I see what your saying HMO.

I was a big fan of his on the field. Most like watching Brown and Summers, I liked watching Asa move around and get in on just about every tackle. So this is a big disappointment for me as a fan.

Asa came to Liberty for a second chance, where campus policies create and environment with virtually no peer pressure in that direction. I hope this is a life changer for him. I hope he finishes his education by transferring or studying online. My prayers are with him, the LU coaches and his family. He's young man with lots of time to man up and be successful in life.

From an LU football stand point ... if he's guilty the program needs to deal with it and move on. One student, one mistake can't stop a great thing. In fact dealing with it the right way can have a positive impact moving forward.

Just to be picky here VBSF, there's trouble here if you go looking around enough for it. Those of you who went here, you know what I mean.

It's really all about getting connected with good influences as soon as you get here.

Which is true except for the majority of the football team lives off-campus from the moment they arrive at Liberty.

I dont think that is true. Unless it has changed, players are required to live on campus for the first little bit.

For the record IM an old guy, an LU Uncle and an alumi's brother.

I know what you're saying .... there's always going to be negative influences around .... especially at that age. My nephew moved off campus after his freshman year and now it's up to him. It's been a good experiences. I guess what I should have said is that the peer pressure at LU leans heavily in the opposite direction. I guess in Chapman's case it wasn't enough

Coaches are ALWAYS the last to know. It is unfortunate that either their wasn't a culture or he didn't put himself inside a culture of responsibility. It is easy to hide things from coaches but impossible to hide them from other teammates. There were players on the team that knew what was going on and it is unfortunate they were not there to intervene in a positive way on his behalf.
HMO makes a (shockingly) salient point. Satan is ALL over this guy right now. He has won this battle in Asa's life and he is pushing to win the war. Let's pray he can find the way to overcome this and realize he has a lot of QUALITY life worth living left
