Defensive Summary: Expect us to have a very basic and balanced offensive game plan and just let our superior athletes make plays.
if this is how they feel then they will be in for a litttle suprise. We have our own superior athletes that will make plays.

I hope we destroy Liberty though. I'll be at that game with a Liberty alum who thinks their school is hot crap in football. Looking forward to bringing them their FBS reality check!

What is this person talking about when he says NC State will be Liberty's first BCS game?

Liberty has played a bunch of BCS (1-A) teams in the past. NC State won'te even be our first game against a team from an auto qualifying BCS conference, if that what it means...because I believe the Big East (aka West Virginia) is an auto qualifying BCS conference for the conference winner.

The guys over at Pack Pride have been reading our board so I think it is fitting for us to return the favor ...

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=178&f=2515&t=7793911

My favorite poster in the thread is the Western Carolina alum who uses every post to somehow suggest that Liberty is a big step down from WCU and the SoCon. :rofl

I also enjoy the posters questioning Mike's ability to play with the big boys. They should chat with some WVU fans.

NC State SHOULD win this game. But to be fair, as some NCSU posters in the thread acknowledge we are not an FCS bottomfeeder like WCU. Some even suggest we aren't on Akron's level ... nevermind the fact that we beat one of their MAC rivals last year on the road while the Zips were losing at home to one of the Big South also rans.

A couple NC State fans have registered on here and I hope they join the conversation. I have applied to post on their forum but they haven't approved me yet.

Welcome to the board, Wolfpack.

Yeah, I hope NC State fans recognize the difference between an FCS startup like South Alabama and a Top 15-20 team like the Flames. We recognize that ACC fans don't have to even acknowledge FCS programs very often. But the level of competition is not the ridiculous dropoff that you might expect despite the 23-scholarship disadvantage.

I like this one ....
Don't underestimate Rocco. He's built a good program up there .....I wanted Rocco for ECU before Ruff was hired. (Interestingly he was offered a new contract to stay the same week we hired Ruff, BTW) I still think Rocco’s got an FBS future eventually.
I hope Rocco's FBS future is at Liberty.

Agreed, VBSF.net ...

The Wolfpack defense just took a major hit this afternoon as their defensive captain went down ...

We played App State a few years back (Armanti Edwards was injured that game and didn't play...lucky for us). I want to say it was 2006. We went 3-9 that season and were absolutely terrible. One of the worst seasons in NC State's recent history. We won the game 23-9 (or maybe 23-10) but it was a dogfight. App State had trouble moving the ball all game on our D (again, Edwards was injured) and our offense wasn't exactly setting any records either.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I do think most State fans realize that Liberty is not Western Carolina, South Alabama, or one of the other FCS teams we've played in recent memory...Liberty has a respectable program. I fully expect NC State win this game...that being said, it won't be a total cake walk either. We'll be breaking in a new QB and inexperience WRs, we'll be without our #1 RB (Greene) and our #1 DE (Sweezy...he's very talented) and a handful of other injured players.

I look forward to the game, wish you all the best of luck this season (except for the game against us, of course :D )

My favorite was the poster questioning Mike Brown's speed against a major FBS team. He absolutely shredded WVU for 11 catches and 157 yards. WVU is still having nightmares about Brown running circles around their secondary.

I'm not counting on a win but I think NC State fans are delusional if they think there program is "major." They aren't very good and will be lucky to win more than 3 conference games in a down ACC year.

^I'll be the first State fan to admit that we aren't nationally relevant...but we've got quite the favorable schedule (both OOC and in conference). If we only manage 3 conference wins, we'll have underachieved. This team (albeit, with a different QB and more experience WRs) won 9 games last year including victories over WV and FSU. The defense will be improved this season, especially the secondary (something I think a lot of you may be overlooking). The offense will still be a threat, but it may take a few games for the younger guys to settle in. Conservatively, I'd say anything less than 7 wins would be a letdown...8 or 9 wins seems realistic given our schedule.

Yeah, they might not be all that great in the ACC, but look at the schedule they drew this year. They should win more than 3... more like 5 or 6.

Other than Wake Forest and Clemson, I don't see any other guaranteed wins, IMO. BC and Maryland are toss-ups at this point and probably could either way, with Maryland probably being the favorites going in to the game. Virginia will be much improved and FSU is a national title threat.

Catching a huge break with Cincinatti looking like they will probably be pretty bad this year. I see 7-6 at best if everything falls in to line.

Not to hijack the thread away from the game talk, but...

if you call the Wake and Clemson games wins...and FSU and MD losses, the remaining 4 (GT, UVa, UNC, BC) would be toss ups? Just assume we go 2-2 in those...that's 4 conference wins. And I feel like that's being conservative in a weak ACC.

Anyway, back to the game...what can we expect to see out of LU's defense? What's LU's strengths/weaknesses on D?

Did you see 7-6 at best or did you mistype and meant to say at WORST? At best State could go 11-1 if Glennon and the offense plays to their potential. Another thing wrong is you saying Clemson being a guranteed win? There not to bad themselves and many people believe either NCSU or CU will be 2nd in the Atlantic.

Pack fan here, just thought a would give you guys a quick rundown of the game.

The closest FCS game State has had in the past in the past 10 years was against #1 ranked App. State and it was 23-10. App would go undefeated the rest of the season and win a national Championship. Chuck Amato was coaching this era. In the TOB era, State has not scored less than 48 points on FCS teams and FCS teams have not scored more than 10. I expect LU to score more than 10 though.

I see many LU fans are expecting State to overlook this game... :BS . I mean it could happen but I would not plan a TOB coached team to overlook any team. For many of you who do not know TOB he is known for his disiplined teams with very few penalties.

Defense: NC. States defense is the preseason #8 ranked defense in the country returning 8 starters from last years team. One defensive player will miss the opener J.R. Sweezy a DL. State's strengh comes from it's front seven who have a Nate Irving like linebacker in Terrel Manning OLB and an athletic Bruiser in MLB Audie Cole along with DJ Green a 6-4 very speedy OLB. The pack lost two defensive lineman but they are replaced by two DL who played very much last year. All four defensive backs are returners and 3 of them are 3 year starters.

Offense: Of course everyone knows about Russell Wison gone, but meet Mike Glennon. Glennon was the # 5 ranked QB in the 2008 class rated ahead of #7 Andrew Luck. He was a four star recruit and has an absolute cannon on his shoulder. The Pack does have some guys at reciever who are getting use to a new QB but the recievers and Mike have been working together since the Spring which would not have happened with Russell Wilson. The offensive line returns 4 starters one of which is questionable for the LU game. The 5th lineman at tackle is Sophmore Robert Crisp who was a 5 star recruit and the #4 OT in his class. State is very deep at the RB position even without starter Mustafa "Moose" Greene who will be out with a foot injury.

Prediction: LU has a great offense but State has the best defense it has had since the Mario Williams era. The Pack has the potential to run the table in the Atlantic if the offense clicksand with a win in Talahasse could be in Charlotte in the ACC Championship; as for this game I believe.

State: 44
LU:20

Good Luck to Liberty, as for fans going I hope you guys have an awesome time at the greatest football atmoshpere in North Carolina. Great tailgating and Grade A complex which seats 60,000.
