LU shot an 11 under 277 to take a 17 shot lead over Gardner-Webb after the end of the second round. LU and Gardner-Webb were the only teams under par today. Preston Dembowiak shot a 6 under 66 and leads the team competition by four shots over teammate Max Mc Kay and J.J. Regan of Gardner-Webb. Max Mc Kay, Robert Karlsson, and Chase Marinell were also under par today.

Coastal is in 6th place and 33 strokes off the pace! They should be embarassed. With the built in advantage they have due to their location, they should dominate the BSC every year. What our guys are doing is amazing.
Good golf programs can be built away from the beach and LU has that right now. Coastal does have the nice weather and plenty of courses to tout their program plus their overall success. We do have Poplar Grove as one of our home courses which was Sam Snead's final design and is a very nice course, as well as a nice on campus practice facility with a driving range and short game area which is on par with other DI programs, but ideally our own course would be awesome. A great Job by Coach Thomas and the team.
The beach is a non-factor. It's the 100+ golf courses (including several of the best in the country) that should give CCU a huge advantage, which money really can't do much to overcome. Our overall athletic budget does give us an advantage, and it looks like we will be winning our 4th straight Sasser cup, especially if our golfers can finish the job tomorrow.
I think LU is pretty safe going into tomorrow...To put it in perspective...even if LU shot even par as a team...Gardner-Webb (in second) would have to shoot a 271 which is right around 4 under per scoring team member...and that is just to tie

the beach is the reason there are 100 plus courses so yeah...the beach is a factor. but there are plenty of quality golf programs inland that do just fine.
midway through the third round, the Flames are +4 as a team, with winthrop and coastal the early hot teams in round three with -1 and even par totals through 9 holes.
preston dembowiak- +3 through 9 holes with two double bogeys
robert karlsoon- -2 through 9 holes with three birdies
max mc kay- +3 through 9 holes with four bogeys
chase marinell- +2 through 9 holes with theee birdies and three bogeys
andrew colvin- +1 through 9 holes with two double bogeys
the boys are struggling a bit, but we have a big lead. here is to hoping the guys maintain. GO FLAMES!
Liberty will win the 2011 Big South Golf Championship as they are on the final four holes and have a 31 stroke lead on second place Gardner-Webb. Also, Preston Dembowiak has locked up individual medalist honors and LU has the top 3 golfers on the individual leaderboard.

How about this for a neat story. Preston Dembowiak is a senior, and had not won a tournament in his 4 years as a college golfer. He won his first and shot his lowest 3 round score ever in his final try to help the team win their first conference championship!
I didn't realize just how dominant CCU has been in BSC golf. This is only the second time they haven't won in the last 14 years. No idea why they were below their usual standards this season, but I guess they are entitled to be a little off once every 7 years, even with their "advantages". My bad on that one. Hopefully this will not be a one-off fluke year for us too, and we can continue to challenge their golf supremecy.
I don't think this will be a fluke year. The program has consistantly dropped in the rankings the last five years 180 - 140 - 100 - 80 - 29 (now). This has been a progression of building a program. The top four starters consist of a Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman. Karlsson (Junior) is currently ranked 34th in the nation and will be one of the top players in NCAA golf when the season starts next year. Hopefully they will finish the season off well and make a run for the national championship.
