According to the article I posted in the other John Brown thread, he was accused of plagiarizing on a test, though Brown has denied that charge ever since that happened.

And he had already redshirted a year at the Citadel, so if he transferred straight to a D1, he would have had to sit out, and he would have still lost a year of eligibility...he would have still been a junior this year, but he at least got to play last year by going the juco route. Also, he didn't resign from the Citadel until August, so not sure how many options he would have had that late in the summer.

He's also been quoted as saying "I'm an honors student I don't need to cheat."

I had forgotten about the charge of plaigerism at the Citadel. I think his academic record at all 3 schools he has attended pretty much indicate that it's more likely people are cheating off of him than the other way around. I love the "I don't have to cheat" line.

Answer to your question from Chris Lang and much, much more!
How Brown got to Roane State was an entirely different story. He grew up in Savannah, Ga., where his parents still live, and chose to attend The Citadel, an up-and-coming Southern Conference program coached by Ed Conroy just up U.S. 17 in Charleston, S.C.. After sitting out his first year, he made an impact as a redshirt freshman, becoming a regular starter after Christmas and averaging 6.4 points and 8.1 rebounds during the Bulldogs’ SoCon games.

But after the season ended, word leaked that Brown had run afoul of the The Citadel’s honor code, and he later resigned from the school rather than face disciplinary charges that would have gone on his transcript.

Brown explained the situation: "I got accused, basically, of cheating. They said I plagiarized on a test. I don’t understand how I could plagiarize on a test. It wasn’t like cheating, looking at someone’s paper. It was a take-home test. We have an honor court at The Citadel. I plead my case in front of the honor court, and they said there was evidence against me that I plagiarized.

"I put my right hand to God that I’d never do that. I’m a 3.0 student. I don’t need to cheat."

Brown was a Dean’s List student at Roane State, leaving after compiling a 3.7 GPA.

Your are reaching RBD. He says he didn't do anything, and I believe him. Now for him to make you wish he had of fought it!

CCU is never in any position to point fingers at anyone, even if they are guilty. Take care of your own mess first.

I have no reason to doubt John Brown, but come on guys you know if he was on any other big south team we would all be talking as if he was guilty just to get under the skin of some people...

From talking to him, he said they said they had evidence of him doing it and it was going to be really hard for him to win the appeal. So instead of wasting a year, he moved on so he could continue playing basketball.

Also of note from the Post & Courier story on him leaving The Citadel was a comment saying that the particular professor in question had a history of calling out athletes on tests.

Let's just say even if he had done it... isn't Liberty a good place for a guy to be? We are a university of second chances, whether folks like it or not. I know some people who probably shouldn't have made it to go here and their lives has changes so much for the better. But, there's still trouble if you're here to find it.

When John Brown was forced to leave The Citadel in August 2009, ex-Bulldogs coach Ed Conroy predicted big things for the 6-4 forward from Savannah.

"I don't have any doubt he will go on to have a fantastic career somewhere," Conroy told me that day.

Conroy's prediction for Brown has come true -- at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., of all places.
