BJWilliams wrote:In track...has he never heard of Brant Tolsma? or Josh McDougal (four time BSC champion in XC)? or Sam Chelanga?

the mcdougals, sammy and evans have little to do with what this overzealous coastal poster said. coach connie only coaches the ladies' XC and track teams at ccu. i ran xc and track at coastal myself and know al pretty well...he does have a crap-ton of BSC titles and COY awards.

baseball - coastal has owned.

golf - coastal has owned.

football - i thought he was way over the top on this one, but upon further review you find that bennett and ccu have only played 8 years of football and have 4 conference titles and the BSC's only 2 FCS post-season appearances.

basketball - wow, we sure have taken our lumps over the last 12-15 years, but 28 wins a year ago is the BSC record...and the boys are on their way to maybe even surpassing that this year.

so while my fellow chant was definitely puffing his chest out a little too far (especially after barely beating a 7-13 gwu squad... :?), he wasn't all that far off the mark. we were already winthrop and csu's biggest rival - now we're quickly becoming a bigger target for the flames. slowly taking the spot of radford. BEAT COASTAL anyone??

the original poster's only real fault was going so far as to say the "gold standard". hard to be that cut and dried when there are few other sports that you're not top 2 or 3 in. i can understand why any lu supporter would take a bit of exception with that b/c lu tends to dominate a lot of these other sports that this guy failed to mention...women's bball and the men's side of xc and track certainly jumps right to mind.

This was my response:
You (Coastal) have by-far the best golf program.

You (Coastal) have by-far the best baseball program.

Football has not dominated from the outset. They are tied for most championships (2.88) but hold the record for most playoff appearances so I have no problem giving you the edge there. Remember though 90% of this board wanted David Bennett fired halfway through last year so it hasn't all been great on the football front.

Winthrop is the best basketball program in the league even if Coastal has the better team currently. Nothing Coastal has done in basketball could touch the reign that Winthrop had. Nothing anyone in the league has done in basketball could touch that.

Liberty is the best women's basketball program in the league. Their dominance over the last 14 years is unparalleled.

As for Alan Connie, if he has more than 81 conference titles, 5 national titles, and 43 Big South Coach of the Year honors, we'll talk. If he doesn't, then, well you're wrong.

Coastal is good. They have a good athletics program as evidenced by the 9 Sasser Cups that they have won which is most in the league (next is Liberty at eight). To think that no one else in this conference has ever done anything is completely idiotic and downright ignorant though.

Support your team. Look through teal colored glasses. That's your right as a fan. But don't disrespect the entire league. That just makes your accomplishments look less than what they are. Dominating a crappy league doesn't make you look good. Winning a league that is solid and competitive does.

Great stat, olldfame. Also, in the varsity sport of the mind, Quiz Bowl, Liberty has won 4 Big South Conference championships in 5 years. Coastal is hosting the tournament next Saturday, and our friend Kyle Kallander will be there to pass out the hardware. This time next week, I'll be able to tell you who the 2011 Quiz Bowl champions are in the Big South.

SJ, don’t give golf to CCU so easily. No doubt they have had a Carey Green type of run and Dustin Johnson = WOW! But Liberty has loosened that stranglehold on golf and is currently ranked 25 spots better than coastal.

CCU is located next door to one of the golf Meccas of this country. They should be at or near the top every year, and usually are. LU being currently ranked higher than they are is a huge accomplishment for our program.

That's why I said program. Their program has been better than ours. Our team is better than them right now. Good teams build good programs. We're getting there but not there yet.

Check out their board- particularly the preseason basketball smack. There are more than a few Realist types who think that the only school in the Big South that has a recognizable name is Winthrop. I wouldn't even bother lurking, but Winthropfans has the best conference breakdown if I want to see what the other teams are doing.

Langs midseason all conference teams..

FIRST-TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
Jesse Sanders, G, Liberty
Desmond Holloway, G, Coastal Carolina
Austin Kenon, G, VMI
Jamarco Warren, G, Charleston Southern
Chad Gray, F, Coastal Carolina (Gray gets the nod over Liberty’s John Brown and VMI’s Stan Okoye ... my vote may be skewed by the fact that Gray completely took over during the stretch of the Liberty game in which the Chanticleers took control. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those guys in that last spot.)

SECOND-TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
John Brown, G/F, Liberty
Stan Okoye, F, VMI
J.P. Primm, G, UNC Asheville
Kelvin Martin, F, Charleston Southern
Khalid Mutakabbir, G, Presbyterian College

HONORABLE MENTION ALL-CONFERENCE
Robbie Dreher, G, Winthrop
Keith Gabriel, G/F, VMI
Evan Gordon, G, Liberty
Matt Dickey, G, UNC Asheville
Nick Barbour, G, High Point

ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM
Kierre Greenwood, G, Coastal Carolina
Sam McLaurin, F, Coastal Carolina
D.J. Covington, C, VMI
Evan Gordon, G, Liberty
Blake Smith, G, Radford

ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM
Luke Davis, G, Gardner-Webb
Sheldon Strickland, G, Charleston Southern
D.J. Covington, C, VMI
Rodney Glasgow, G, VMI
Du’Vaughn Maxwell, F, High Point

I'm not a big fan of all-conference teams that completely ignore position. I know that is the way it has traditionally been done in the BSC, so I guess it makes sense for Lang to do it that way. Even so, I would have JB in there over Jamarco Warren. 3 guards are plenty, and JB leads the conference in both rebounding and shooting percentage by wide margins.

Valid criticism, olldflame, and you're right, I pretty much based it on how the voting has gone in the past.

If you go purely by position, Brown would certainly be the second forward on the team. Of course, Liberty lists him as a guard, though.

This is really a guard-driven league.

This is two games in a row that the OPPS have axed the power on our postgame show! But PLEASE, every game COASTAL is the Arch-enemy... Its been that way since the inception of the Big South Conference! Russ Bergman dominated them, which hatched their hatred, Gary Gilmore has held the Mortgage on every baseball stadium in the BSC for over a decade, Alan Connie has more CC & Track Championships than anyone ALIVE, Shawn Dockery is the only soccer coach in the entire conference that antone has EVER heard of, we have more PGA professionals that ALL of the other BSC schools combined, David Bennett has dominated from the outset of our football existence and now Cliff Ellis stands at the pay window of EVERY game VS. EVERY team in the league!!! Coastal IS the Gold-Standard in the BSC and a win over them in ANY sport is cause for a Campus-wide party... Which is why its GREAT to be a Chant!!!!
The same guy who posted that, posted this as a follow-up:
BTC... You certainly have a valid point... The location of the school, the transient nature of the student-body (although we are locals & my son went to Socastee), and the fact that half of the schools in the BSC are private and of devotional nature (Liberty, Presbyterian, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, High Point), there is certainly going to be a "hedonistic" hatred toward the secular schools and moreso vs. the ones with success in extracurricular activities! But, I interviewed Dr. Falwell many times through the years and he NEVER used those factors as a crutch and always believed that his school could compete on a level playing field even with the limitations that LU demands. BTW, I forgot to include this in my last post... While I support ALL of our teams and attend the CCU Women's BB games occasionally, don't cite the LU WBB dominance of the BSC... No one cares! I was reluctant to mention Soccer, Golf & CC in my original post, but their utter dominance in in those men's sports is undeniable... Yes, I'm a sexist pig and proud of it!

Apparently he doesnt do much in the way of research...Coastal hasnt won the team title in men's XC since 1996...while in that same time frame Liberty has won it 9 times...including the last six...plus they have only had one individual champion in Big South history (and he won twice)...Liberty has had 6 (including our fellow poster and American record holder Mr Cox)...I wouldnt exactly call that dominance

I think that the fact you LU guys are spending soooo much time researching & refuting this info from CCU's message board from one outlying poster (who didn't make the statement on this board)- speaks volumes to me.. Call it what you want but I thought this was in the Mens Basketball forum for a reason..

Thanks SJ once again...getting back to the fact that this is basketball...the Chants are doing well this year... but Winthrop (and this will make Realist puff his chest out Im sure) is the standard in men's basketball (although they are slightly down this year)...I wouldnt go so far as to say they are far and away better overall...this year they certainly are the team to beat (and obviously that hasnt happened as of yet) but you can only play with house money for so long...

It's more than just boredom folks.. I'd use the word envy if it didn't result in all the backlash- combined with the "BEAT COASTAL" shirts it looks like more to me- maybe LU makes "BEAT enter your BSC school" shirts for every team but I haven't seen them for anyone else but CCU.. Maybe it's just a rivalry & banter between good programs & hopefully not obsessive/envy/jealousy, et al..

When we started the "Beat Coastal" campaign (4 years ago) we couldn't make the argument that we had the better athletic program. After the past 4 years, we can.

You know it's serious when LU passes out free BEAT COASTAL T-shirts at a GIRL'S basketball game. 500 were given away last night!
