The days of our coach getting outfoxed by Dugger are a thing of the past. Our guys were totally prepared. We had no problem with their defensive pressure at all. Radfords zone gave us a lot more trouble, and I think we need to be prepared for future opponents to zone us.

Of the many lovely statistics from this game, I think I like this one best:

26 assists/11 turnovers

SCAR - I was watching the play back and you REALLY disappoint me in your rules knowledge. Specifically, you can NOT travel when you are taking the ball out of bounds. Secondly, you are allowed to move laterally within 3 feet to EITHER side, so long as ONE FOOT is within that space, you are legal.
Next you are going to start calling for over the back and reaching!!!!! At least you didn't call VMI's style 'RUM and Gun!" :D

Another great game for Liberty. What made me very happy was the low number of turnovers and how we controlled the tempo of the game. Of course shooting 9-11 from the 3pt line was very nice. My question is: Was this a breakout game for David Minaya and will we be seeing more scoring from him in the second half of the season?

David could not miss tonight and that really provided a spark with Evan and Jesse not filling it up...also I did some research and you have to go all the way back to 1991 to find a game where LU scored 100 or more points against a Div I school NOT named VMI

oldflame..i was thinking the same thing the entire game. I wasnt sure about Layer when we first hired because his overrall record just wasn't that intriguing but he has really impressed with the way he has built this team and with his ability to adjust our teams play to the opponent. How about Minaya coming out and shooting the rock like a stud tonight, you guys were right on calling that. I also like seeing Sommy get out there and just show that raw athleticism. Maybe the biggest reason we won big was basically having two PG's out there with Evan and Jesse shredding their traps and penetrating to create for themselves or others. JB is one of those guys that sneaks up on you with his 14 and 10 every game, such a key piece. Great team effort tonight from everyone that got in there, thats exactly why you need to beat them.

John Brown came in at #8 on sportcenter's top 10 plays tonight. Great mid air touch pass by him to Burrus for the Dunk. Very cool to see LU on sportcenter. Great game by the guys and I hope they keep it up!

I had a feeling that it could make the top 10. That was a great showcase of athleticism. Is it me or does John Brown remind anyone a little bit of Gabe Martin?

Love this quote from VMI Head Coach Duggar Baucom
"We were good for the first eight minutes when Austin Kenon was making shots, but then Jesse Sanders decided to play. It was "Katie, bar the door" at that point. Sanders and John Brown are a portrait of how to play hard and play with passion. We've never beaten Jesse Sanders, and he was the key to this game."

most complete game this season. i admit i was very nervous and doubted the guys in regards to this game, but this team continues to impress and you just cannot count them out. whomever said minaya was the x-factor is right on with that. david has improved every game and it is a joy to see. very disappointed duggar has scrapped the sweater vest though, and it looks like he has trimmed up a bit too..lol. and props to the students for coming out. with this performance maybe they will keep coming back!

Another great article by Lang, even if he didn't show Anderson any love for rediscovering his 3-ball stroke. Coach Layer has to LOVE this quote by the sweater vest-LESS Duggar:
Minaya carries Flames to victory over Keydets

(check out the defensive position [his arms] of VMI's #14)

...“I thought they outtoughed us and outworked us,” Baucom said. “Loose balls, we’d bend down to pick them up. They’d dive to pick them up. I think that’s a huge difference.”

Has anybody noticed how soft this team is around the rim? It seems to be getting better but every game there seems to be a couple of missed layups when a dunk would have finished the play. JVP is the main culprit but I guess that's something that inexperienced players seem to have to learn. I don't know why. If I could dunk I would never shoot the ball.

Realist's take:
LU beats VMI with Kenon Flu ridden and missing Covington. I'll say this, if LU can play every game with a key players out every game, they'll keep winning. I'm not sure they've faced a full complement team so far this year.

Hey, it's true. About VMI never beating LU w/Jesse S. playing.

Congrats on a great game and fine execution on both ends. LU forced VMI to pass the ball around the arc, versus driving and dishing to the wings. Having Covington may have made a bit of a difference, but you can't defend 9-11 shooting from 3 (unless you swing a 2x4 at the shooter  ).

I believe Sanders is truely one of the best 12-14 lead guards in America.

He's persistent. I remember we used to try to predict the end of WU and would try to explain them away, but after 9 games we would have to accept reality. 8-1 is pretty hard to ignore. I'm impressed he's even trying to.

She is a bitter person and that is compounded by the struggles of Winthrop this season.

Kenon sure looked healthy to me. I guess Sir Realist is thinking he would have scored 50 if he didn't have the "flu"?

As far as Covington's injury is concerned, if we want to talk about impact Freshmen who did not play in this game, then I reserve the right to bring up the fact that we have been without Steven Baird all year.

Just for you ... The story was getting a little long so I didn't have any room for this Minaya quote about Anderson:

"To get Jeremy going is real big for our team. Having that shooter where they have to respect him, they really can't help off on anybody. Jesse gets more room, John Brown gets more wiggle room on the baseline. So it's really big for our team to get Jeremy going.

"You know, with Jeremy, we believe every shot he takes is going in. We tell him to keep shooting. The more shots, the better, you know?"

I already called that.

jcmanson wrote:John Brown = Gabe Martin
To paraphrase Lloyd Benson's famous putdown of Dan Quayle

"I watched Gabe Martin play a lot of basketball"
"Gabe Martin is one of my favorite all time Flames"

"John Brown is no Gabe Martin"

I love JB, and there are some similarities in size, body type and athleticism, but they have 2 entirely different skill sets. Gabe was an 80+% FT shooter and could also knock down the 3, post up and drive on his man. There is no comparison offensively.

I think they are about equal on D, and I would give JB a slight edge as a rebounder. Stylistically, they don't look alike on the floor. No tomahawk dunks from JB. He's a meat-and-potatoes 2-handed dunker, and doesn't hesitate to just lay it in if his steps are a little off.

I was the first to compare him to the BSC player I think he resembles most, and that is Joseph Harris of Coastal. If anyone thinks that's insulting to JB, go back and look at what Harris did (especially against us).
