I'm guessing since we haven't heard anything this has been put off for the short term. Would that be correct? I mean we'd only need the extra seating for the first quarter, but still...

The earliest I think anyone was talking was after next season so not really any reason to make that decision yet.

I'm not sure that this is the case. I think they will continue to build of the momentum is there to do so. Growth is good for everything - football games, graduation, the University, etc... if there are willing donors or the money is there - I see no reason to stop the additions, but I'm pretty sure that the plan was always to continue with Phase 2 in a few years any ways.

Guys - we can complain about the students leaving, but that can be fixed with one announcement from Jerry during Convo. Right now I don't see that as a concern - a few smaller promotions will communicate and fix this problem. IMHO.

Perhaps I could suggest that any FBS discussions would have an immediate impact on timelines for expansion. If it takes putting shovels int he ground on next phase to be the clincher in an invitation to an existing league or involvement in a new league then all existing timelines could be drastically affected.

This coming spring & summer could be very interesting as we approach the lifting of the moratorium.

I'm saying if Jerry, Jr got up in convo and asked students to stay - they would.

Because you build when you have money, someone willing to give money, or building is cheap...

People leaving is annoying, but LU doesn't count attendance in the 4th;)

big reason to do it is low construction costs thus the new overall campus plans. being in the construction business, contractors are taking jobs at astronomically low numbers right now and are making very little money but want to keep their workers employed. big reason not to do it, the addition would be empty which to me takes away from the game atmosphere.

a lot more would stay longer, but not a majority and not the whole game.

we may have a few extra thousand staying to the third quarter, for the game the day after he makes the announcement, and then right back to the way things were the week before he would say anything.

Between this and the FBS talk, timelines that were set awhile ago have to be up in the air.

I am very impressed with Chancellor Falwell and everything he has done. I also am not a current student, but do you really think if he asked students to stay the whole game it would have a magical effect and thousands of people would all of a sudden stay when they wanted to leave before? If so I may be underestimating him.

As for low construction costs, that makes sense. Hadn't thought about that. Of course, that's a pretty big gamble that you will need it one day. However, LU has always been about the big gamble paying off.
I wouldn't underestimate the power and influence admin has on the students. They have always responded well to direct challenges. I don't think that this was the year to pull that card, but next year might be our best bet...

My bad. I thought this was about the Song Parody Contest tonite at PHASE 2 (Formerly Cattle Annies) Always fun to see UVA and TECH fans go back and forth and some of the songs are quite clever!
I would say it is also nice to attend to see how "real fans" support their team, but that would be wrong!

Ive only left one game early in the last (now) 8 seasons and that was JMU in 09 because it was a deluge and I was soaked to the skin (I was sick for three weeks after). Now one thing that really hit me is that the players are noticing people leaving early. I think that a combination of Jerry Jr asking the students to stay, and either one of the players (like 2-time BSC Offensive PoY Mike Brown) and/or a big promotion that requires staying for the whole game to qualify, plus reworking the timing of other events (like concerts or hockey games or theater productions as was mentioned in another thread) would go a long way to helping with the student exodus.

I love how you had to point out that Mike Brown was 2-time offensive player of the year like we didn't know that.

what if when they put up the new fencing around the stadium, they install some sort of locking mechanism on the gates? Would that help?

Electrical fence...? Like one of the electrical wires that surround cow farms.

I like the idea of those invisible fenses. We could give out necklaces for the giveaway and if they leave they get a little shock until they step back in the stadium.

It's not about locking them in or shutting the campus down during games, it's about changing the culture at games.

Care to elaborate proto? I mean we have only lost two games to ANYONE at home in the last (now) four seasons. And those games arent close either...Im not saying we shut the campus down or put in electrical fences around the stadium, maybe make some scheduling adjustments to other events to maximize the ability for students to stay for the whole game. What do you mean by "change the culture at games"?

you have to make it THE place to be and honestly until we are able to bring better opponents INTO Lynchburg people aren't going to care. Its FCS guys, we have the same problem MOST FCS programs have, we aren't special.

People have often said on here that winning is the cure...what has the football team been doing the last 5 seasons...exactly that...WINNING.

Look at our home records since Danny Rocco got here:

2006: 4-2
2007: 6-0
2008: 6-1 (including a win over a ranked Elon)
2009: 5-1
2010: 5-0 (including the win at City Stadium

That is a cumulative record of 26-4 in five seasons. Over that time the attendance at games has increased dramatically (we only had one game under 10,000 in attendance this year and that was at City Stadium). In all 5 home games this year, we never scored less than 40 points (and won by an average of 31.8 points in each game). To get to postie's point, Im sure that the department WANTS to bring better opponents in (like Wofford, Appalachian State, Delaware, Richmond who is coming in a couple years, Villanova, South Carolina State, Jacksonville State, William and Mary, etc, etc.) and we could go on and on about that ad nauseum ad infinitum, but we have to ask ourselves...do we want wins, or do we want relevancy.

Maybe it's not about JUST winning. Maybe it's about game day management. Have you considered that? Parking is and always has been atrocious. If you want to grab something from a concession stand, you're going to have to miss a full quarter of game action for an overpriced cold pretzel. Maybe people leave when there's still 20 minutes left in the game because they already launched the post-game fireworks.
