I am NOT on board with calling for a new head coach. I am, however, calling for changes. Our Defense has not shown up for more than one big game that I can remember in the past few years. Talent or lack thereof may explain some of that when you are talking about a WVU or other OOC game but when it comes to the losses or even the close games that shouldn't have been close in conference I don't think talent is the issue. It is clearly schemes, lack of adjustments in game and motivation that ultimately fall on the defensive coaching staff. Until we prove ourselves on D (like holding someone to less than 20) in a few games against the top third of FBS I will no longer buy that we are a top 25 program. I fully expect changes to be made before next season to address this recurring issue with our D.
As far as O. Are there some issues? Yes, but 25-30pts should be enough to win most games if you have a decent D.

This game: Did CCU come out hot, absolutely, but receivers were WIDE OPEN many times and we got no pressure on their QB. Hard to miss too many throws even for an average qb when that happens. Theirs is better than the average so that explains that.

Money: We have put a lot of $ into the program and our administration continues to give our team everything it needs to succeed. With that investment comes higher expectations. Coach Rocco stated as much early in the season. I don't think it is wrong of fans to expect more.

Today vs. Yesterday: Many of the comments that talk about how much better we are now than before seem only to remember back to the Karcher era. It is hard not to be better than those years. Previous to that we were playing some tough teams and winning some big games. I see us as at an equal place to where we were previous to Karcher. We expected to take a step forward then and went backward. Now we are back and looking to take the next step and the school has put it's $ where it's mouth is. I think we will see that next step made but not without some changes.

olldflame wrote:While some very valid points have been made in this discussion, assuming the word "coach" is referring to the HEAD COACH, I absolutely disagree with the initial premise contained in the thread title. Now is not the time to get rid of Danny Rocco. I do believe it is the time to stop drinking the Rocco as messiah koolade and look at what needs to be done to acheive the next step in this programs progress, which is a berth in the playoffs.

Tenacity is needed in a coach, but so is creativity. Danny has plenty of the former, but hasn't shown much of the latter. He seems to too often take the position, "we're going to keep trying this til we make it work" instead of seeing it isn't working and finding something different that will. The creative part doesn't necessarily need to come from him if that's not his strong point, but he needs to find someone who has it and let them use it.

A few weeks ago people here were upset that we didn't throw the ball to Summers on practically every play because "noone can stop him". Not sure if it's the same ones, but now we're mad because we keep trying the fade on the goal line even though the defense knows it's coming, and we have ample evidence that as good as he is, he is NOT unstoppable.

I think our staff would benefit from having a more open mind in utilizing some untapped talent we have on this team. It looks like players are not getting a chance because of the things they can't do instead of utilizing the things they can. Why do we recruit tight ends anyway, if we aren't going to throw them the ball...............EVER? (And please don't point out Shaver's drop against JMU after all the failed fade patterns to Summers we have thrown since then.) Should we not utilize big athletic fullbacks to carry the ball in short yardage because they aren't able to do all of the things we ask our tailbacks to do? Just askin. I think we really need to open up and be less rigid in our thinking.
Good post. It was just a few months ago, we were hoping that DR would stick around for a few more years because he was being considered for other jobs.
We have lost some tough games the last 3 years that have kept us out of the playoffs and it is very frustrating. I still have faith that we can do what is necessary to make us perennial powers in the BS. The powers that be will make the right decision if/when a change is needed.

I agree with the statements that there needs to be change.

Which is why TDD and I want Rocco gone, because he hasn't changed.

As long as he's still here, if things change, then it'll be fine. Maybe he needs to change OC and DC. I dunno. But the fact is that change was already needed and it hasn't been made is extremely frustrating.

Rocco has every chance to redeem himself in my eyes. I just don't see it happening at this point, I'm skeptical that he's willing to change.

Danny's Coach of the Year thing was taken down. What more do you want?

Geez.

This is actually a pretty good thread with the help of the foe feature. :D

I still never got any answer to my question about who the "Fire Danny" police want hired. Or maybe the foe feature kept me from seeing it.

Somebody tell me if I'm wrong...but I believe Richmond was good for a while then they got a new head coach and the first year he won the Nat Champ..right?

Change (whether its coordinators and assistants or Rocco himself) sometimes, can really help teams that can't get over the hump from good to great.

Have they answered yet Old Flame? I see a post was made, haha.

Look, I am majorly disappointed with the lack of performace from both the coaches and the team yesterday. It appeared that we just got smacked in the mouth and had few answers until it was just too late. Again though, we are the one who put the expectations so high.

However I am behind all of the above and believe with patience things have no where to go but up. It takes time to get to the top and stay at the top, and yet this coach has won a ton of games and 3 big south championships. How many championships did we have before he got here?

That's all i want to say for now. 2 cents. :football

I think Jay Mills does a heck of a lot more with what he has than Rocco does.

But whatever. Clearly this isn't the place for a legit discussion.

I'm a crybaby? I'm trying to have a discussion and no one is responding. I've been insulted and put down but not responded to. What has improved since Rocco has been here? How has he fixed the things that haunt us?

But whatever, I forgot this is a pep rally, not a discussion board.

Obviously not if it's the place where we envy what CSU football has and despise what we have. Or where winning football games is considered an invalid reason for keeping a coach. We certainly can't have legit discussions here.

I have a lot of respect for what Mills has done keeping CSU respectable with limited resources. That does NOT mean he would do an amazing job with a lot of resources. It's almost like apples and oranges comparing the LU job and the CCU job.

Tell me TTL, if we clean house and get somebody new (handpicked by you personally if you want), what are their goals and how long do you give them?

Whatever. He's beat a bunch of DII's and bottom 20 FCS teams. He's not the best coach in LU history, much less a top FCS coach. Stop defending him like he's brought us a mantle full of results, he's won 2 Big South titles. BIG SOUTH titles. The conference that has been trashed even this week, despite the fact we've lost in conference three times since Rocco had his program in place.

Luckily, even tho you can say I'm not a fan or that I'm trashing my school, that doesn't change the name of the school on my degree. Judging me based on these words and coming to those conclusions (that I am trashing the school) is flat out wrong. If I didn't support the team why would I care so much about the success of the team? Why would I get so frustrated over things that hold us back?

I support LU athletics. Not Danny Rocco, not anyone else. If I don't think Rocco is what's best for LU football, I'm going to voice my opinion. I have raised valid concerns to which there are no answer, however, I am discredited as someone who is simply being negative for negative's sake.

seriously?? You have tunnel vision when you are fired up. There has been more conversation about re-vamping the coaching staff and giving Rocco another year then anything else...

yes some people have taken "shots" at you which is all you focus on instead of what the majority of the posts have been about...

they know they can get you p issed and it works everytime....

take a deep breath and realize there are more people on there that do not think you are so far off then you think...so stop with the martyr complex and re-read this thread

RD never had one single recruiting violation in all of his time at LU. Stop the lies.

Plus he wasn't trumped by anything but the ego of an undermining AD. RD went 2-1-2-8-3
and had us in position to do something really special in men's basketball. Now we are served kool
aid that 4-3-6 and preseason 6th is a dramatic improvement.

This football program has a 14 million dollar budget funded by Jerry jr not athletics. He needs to evaluate what athletics is doing with the major investment of $$.

We play in a very poor football conference and consistently play a weak schedule. yet our AD promotes it like it is worthy of so much more. Rocco has certainly improved LU football but has failed to deleliver even a NCAA 1AA playoff. RD got us to the NCAA in year two. It is Jerry jr investment and he needs to look at athletic leadership period.

This is murderballing me. It's like he scans every post on the board just waiting for someone to make a Dunton comment. It's so pathetic. It's like that crazy guy from LOST constantly reciting the numbers: 2-1-2-8-3 2-1-2-8-3 2-1-2-8-3 2-1-2-8-3 2-1-2-8-3
