Well, I guess that answers that. Interesting that they decided to keep him on staff. You'd hate to lose him as a professor but you kinda wonder about seminary students respecting him now. Maybe we can get somebody a bit more low key to head it up.

Personally, I'm glad we kept him on as a faculty member. His knowledge and teaching ability is something that's needed in the seminary. He may not be in a position to lead the seminary, but he's in a position to teach and continue to train up our generation.

I'm slow sometimes, so could someone please translate "factual statements that are self-contradictory." If something is a factual statement, how can it be contradictory? Poor wording, or am I missing something? Any theories or explanations?

I sometimes like the "middle of the road" approach, and since I like Caner, I guess I'm ok with this decision. But at the same time, just 'cause I like the guy, doesn't mean this was necessarily the best decision. Guess we'll wait and see what happens over the next few months/years. Will Caner voluntarily stay for much longer? I know in his classes, students will ask him questions regarding his statements at least over the next four years, if not more. And if the students don't find his answers satisfactory, they will continue to ask them. He has to tell the truth, or else the questions may never end.

JM, What are you referencing about the Dean of the School of Law? I haven't personally heard anything about it. Just wondering.

1. It shows a lot of grace for LU to offer him an employment contract for 2010-11.

2. It shows a lot of humility to accept a contract to teach in a school you used to head and face daily questions from students who deserve answers.

3. This incident has been a black eye for LU and for all the faithful believers in general.

4. Next time can we hire a strong but HUMBLE leader? Self promotion gets you burned every time.

I'm sorry but this is just putting a band-aid on the problem. He should have been fired. He lied. You can slice it and dice it anyway you want, but he lied.

I don't see why he'd need to be fired from teaching but I really think there needs to be a SPECIFIC apology. His last one was very generic and still somewhat denying anything had been done wrong.

He lied about his upbringing but there was no academic fraud. All of his degrees are real. Everything else is the truth. He's more than qualified to be an instructor and is one of our better teachers.

I agree with the decision...what is annoying is the thing I read on facebook from people that are like little sheep still believing caner did nothing wrong...or that somehow LU is turning their back on him...its just ridiculous...

Really there is some annoyance to be had for both sides...people who think Caner did nothing wrong as well as people who think he is the worst of the worst for this and shouldnt have even been offered a contract as a professor. Am I justifying what he did? No...lying is lying and its still sin no matter how big or little it may be. I dont think this will discredit LU or LBTS in any way that they are keeping him on to teach because as Jon said, he is one of the better teachers in the seminary if not in all of LU, and even though there will be a lot of questions from students, he still is one of the most popular professors here.

I see what you're saying BJ, but to me people who hold Caner on such a high pedestals are more annoying then the people that think he should've been fired all together. Its wrong to view a person in such a way many at LU hold Caner at...its close to idolization and its wrong...plain in simple

I still believe Caner should have been fired...i like the guy, but those allegations are the things that cause people to presume the worst about look down at LU.

There are well qualified professors who have served the school well and have no challenges to their character, and as a thank you, have been sent to the online/no benefits side of the school, most likely to save money on benefits packages and wages.
This should have been Caner's single option, in my opinion. The fact that he still holds a faculty position on campus reminds me of the good old boy reward system that I thought was being slowly changed.

So much for academia- I guess it is still about numbers and names.
