Andrews, Jones Out With Knee Injuries
Starting tailback, left tackle will not play against Ole Miss

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest junior running back Micah Andrews and senior offensive tackle Arby Jones will miss Saturday's game at Ole Miss with knee injuries.

Andrews, currently the ACC's second-leading rusher, has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Jones, who has started 22 straight games on the Demon Deacon offensive line, has a damaged medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Both injuries occured during the fourth quarter of Wake Forest's win last Saturday at Connecticut.

Andrews is expected to miss at least two weeks and could be out for the season. The native of Duluth, Ga., is a member of the Doak Walker Award watch list and was a preseason first team All-ACC pick by a couple of publications. Andrews finished seventh in the ACC in rushing last season despite starting only three games behind ACC Player of the Year Chris Barclay.

The tailback responsibilities fall into the hands of junior De'Angelo Bryant and redshirt freshman Kevin Harris.

"If De'Angelo will stay durable, we don't give up a lot," head coach Jim Grobe said. "He has had a variety of different bumps and bruises that have kept him off the field. We feel that De'Angelo can certainly do it. He just doesn't have the experience that Micah has. Kevin is a guy who can play. He's young and doesn't have a lot of experience, but he's got a lot of ability. We've got to get him on the field."

Bryant has 14 carries for 63 yards in two games this season and one touchdown. He has played 21 games as a Deacon, but has yet to start in college. Bryant was available Saturday at Connecticut, but did not play while recovering from a slight shoulder separation.

In his rookie season, Harris has seven carries for 66 yards, including a 41-yard scamper last week at Connecticut.

Jones, a native of Somerset, Ky., is expected to be out of action for two to six weeks. Senior All-ACC lineman Steve Vallos will shift to left tackle. Redshirt freshmen Jeff Griffin and Joe Birdsong will take the reps vacated by Jones.

"We have got a very talented group of redshirt freshmen that are backups and I think that Jeff Griffin and Joe Birdsong are very capable of getting the job done for us. Again, they just lack the experience. They're very similar to Riley Skinner. They're going to go out and fight and scrap for four quarters, but certainly we will miss Arby's experience."

Wake Forest is already without junior quarterback Benjamin Mauk, who broke his throwing arm and dislocated his right shoulder in the season opener against Syracuse. The Deacons are still without preseason honorable mention All-American defensive end Matt Robinson, who is still recovering from a broken kneecap suffered in last year's season finale.

Nonetheless, Wake Forest is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 1987. This Saturday, the Deacons seek their first four-game winning streak since 1992.
