New tennis courts under construction
August 4, 2009 : University Advancement staff

New NCAA-regulation tennis courts are under construction at Liberty University's Campus North near Regents Parkway.

The plan calls for building 12 courts (the first six are shown above). Crews expect to have the entire facility completed before the start of the 2010 tennis season.

In addition to hosting men’s and women’s collegiate matches and championship tournaments, the complex will also be open for intramural use.

How are the courts progressing?
We have been watching the progress on-line (photos) but it would be great to hear from someone on campus.
Any update would be great.
Thanks! :D

All I know is that for the first few weeks of the fall season, the tennis teams are probably going to have to continue to practice at EC Glass...in the Spring, obviously we'll play indoors for January/February, but should be on the new courts by March at the absolute latest. 8)

Women should be solid again, men should have a breakout year as a legitimate conference contender. I'm excited as well :D

I drove past the new tennis courts today, and it appears that the courts themselves will be BLUE: think Boise State's "smurf turf" but on a tennis court surface.

Pretty much what Tennisfan said, from what I understand our courts will have the US Open look. For some unique looking courts, Virginia Tech's are maroon and orange.

its not really unique to have different colored tennis courts. My highschools were orange courts on a grey surface with black lines (schools colors). The worst ones ive ever seen were maroon and gold. Not that bad you may think, but it was in the central valley of california, and the gold wasnt just tan, it was sparkly gold. Nearly went blind after matches there.

Our new tennis courts are actually going to be red and blue, reflecting the school colors (blue court with red outside).

yeah and they look real nice. I tried grabbing a picture yesterday but the sun made it all shiny. Those will be some extremely nice lookin courts when all is said and done. I almost hope they build another set of courts for students to use and leave those just for the teams.

***Horrible sentence structure below, and I don't care***

Would be pretty cool if they could do stadium seating on either end (top and bottom of the pic below), esp where this pic was taken . Would be pretty good sightlines, considering what area there is to work with.

Sometimes I feel like we throw stuff in wherever it fits, though I suppose it's not practical to plan for 1000 seats (that may never get filled) in every single venue. That's a topic for another day.

Okay, Now everyone is going to think I am CRAZY!
But, Do you know what I think would just be amazing... If a clubhouse was designed and built at the end of the courts and spanned across the road, cars pass under the structure (like a bridge) and the club house would have this great wrap around viewing deck.
On the lower side of the road, the club house could also have a lower viewing deck with steps that lead to the lower 6 courts.
I know the lower 6 are scheduled to be built and it would just be amazing to link the two together to create unity.
Also, the clubhouse or we could call it the "Liberty Tennis Center" would be a safe passage from the upper courts to the lower courts and it would be a central location for the fans to gather, public restrooms, locker rooms for the teams, team rooms for pre-match conferences etc. Rackets could be strung here and it could be a nice place for the team to just hang out.
I know we are talking $$$ but it is fun, fun, fun to dream. My husband is an architect and he would be happy to design something, for free!!
Please don't think I am too crazy!! I just see these courts having great potential but it will take a little creativity and dreaming!
And you know the saying "If you build it they will come"... if the tennis center is inviting I do think students will venture to the courts to watch some great tennis!!
Can't you just imagine a beautiful Lynchburg afternoon, sitting out on this great deck and watching division 1 tennis.... Oh, sounds AMAZING!
Oh, another thought... A great tennis center is always a great recruiting tool too! Coach Johnson would be so proud to show possible recruits the great atmosphere for practice and matches.
As always thanks for letting this be a safe place to share!!
