He had to say something since he's going to be working for the Cardinals. It shouldn't be even a remote surprise to anyone that he used steroids.

By the way, his name is spelled McGwire not Mcguire.

who is this mcguire guy?

Interesting what LaRussa said about he knew Mark Mcgwire would never lie and that is why he so ardently dodged question during the congressional hearing. I've always liked Mark -- saddened me (because I think we all knew) but at the same time I still like him. Outside the baseball world he seemed like a great guy (doing stuff on the Golf channel etc.) and really this is the ONE thing that has hurt his image as a person.

Admitting may never change our opinion about his records and career -- but hopefully it will allow him, as private as he is, to step back into the public spotlight a bit... And maybe even see him as a person not just another roiding baseball player. To some there is no difference, to me...there's a difference.

I'm glad he came out and admitted to it, but most of this PED problem is really MLB's fault. The leaders of baseball from mid 90's till about 2005 didn't give a crap about steroids. They just knew that people would spend a TON watching the Mac and Sosa fight it out every night in the Home Run race. When you've got that kind of publicity, who cares if your horses need a few PED's to keep them going?

I have no problem with the public calling out the players for using/cheating. They deserve to be criticized publicly, but when you have the "policemen" of the sport not caring, why do you expect most people not to cheat? If my boss doesn't care that I come into work 30 minutes late, it is going to be hard to not take advantage of that!

i see this only as a way to try and get himself in the HOF....he waited to see if his # of votes jumped at all and when they didn't, he knew that the path he was on now would never get him in the hall. he's going on the "forgiveness" factor as a last stab at it...

what a schmoe...

"I'm not going to go into the past or talk about my past. I'm here to make a positive influence on this."

this tard has done nothing since then to try and make a positive influence on this...

i was a huge fan because i was a big A's fan as a kid back in the day....

I don't get people's obsession for wanting everyone to fess up or publicly admit whatever wrong they did. Who cares, how does an admission change anything? It's like everyone feels betrayed if they're not given full and complete access to someone.

No shock here. I did want to mention that roids or not, 1998 was one of the best summers ever due to the HR race.

I agree Grad. That is the last time I was into baseball for the entire year. Now baseball is a yawn.

so mcgwire fessed up and will most likely get into the hall now... when does selig finally let in Rose?? i mean he admitted to betting on baseball and has sincerely apologized about it, and yet the guys who used steroids are going to get in... one of the single greatest players ever and you are going to hold him out!! it really makes me mad at selig

I don't think this gets him any closer to the HOF at all. For every vote he may pick up for finally fessing up, he'll lose one from someone who was giving him the "benefit of the doubt". He only got 23% in this year's balloting. That's a long way from 75.

Who's definition are you using? I love that definition as I think it is very biblical, but we're not talking church here. In a secular world, if your competition is cheating, and the policing forces do NOTHING to stop them, why should you feel inclined to follow the rules?

In a basketball game, I don't yell at the other team for pushing or grabbing my team's jersey, I yell at the refs for allowing it. That is EXACTLY what I'm doing here. The policing body of major league baseball created an unfair environment by looking the other way at PED's. Now that these guys are coming out admitting to it, I think the leaders of MLB should be held to as high, if not higher, criticisms.

Call me crazy, but the guy is MOST definitely HOF bound.

Baseball isn't going to keep guys like Clemens, Bonds, Arod, and several other admitted PED users out of the HOF. Maybe McGwire isn't good enough to make it in, but I'd bet everything I have that the players will eventually vote him in. He and Sosa singlehandidly saved baseball in the late 90's after the debacle of the 1994 strike. They ushered in a stream of revenue that may NEVER be seen again in baseball (ticket sales, player salaries, etc.) I think McGwire did enough to qualify, but his steroid use may keep him out for a while, but IMO I'd bet everything on him eventually getting a plaque in Cooperstown.

To your baseball portion, I believe the policing should be held AS HIGH (not higher).

But, that wasn't the primary object of my question.

no way.. you talk to the old players, the guys who played 1-20 years before the steroid era...they are ticked....these guys will not make it. if they kept rose out for betting on his own team, they'll keep these guys out.

They didn't keep Rose out. I've heard many reports that they would vote him in if they had the chance. Rose has been banned from baseball and cannot be reinstated unless the governing body of baseball allows it. (I believe the commissioner can lift the ban, but I am unsure) No one has ever had the chance to vote Pete Rose into the HOF.

I think you are crazy if you think Bonds, Clemens, and Arod won't be in the HOF. They'll get voted in before it gets to the players association. Once they are in, there will be no way they will keep others that deserve HOF status from coming in due to their admission to the use of PED's.

Rose has the most support from the guys who played with him, the only thing keeping him out is Selig (he won't relinquish the ban on him).. Just looking at the numbers Rose is the best player that is hall eligible to not be in the hall... I mean no one is going to touch him in hits for awhile... if ever!!

i think barry and arod and clemens get in based on numbers (even if those numbers are tainted).. maybe mcgwire doesn't get in because his numbers weren't up to par, but you can bet that admitting to using steroids will get him that much closer....
